Democratic governors at a two day caucus in St Louis were offered a new role in shaping a party program in Congress and a yet unnamed representative to advocate for governors at Democratic headquarters. Frank Licht of Rhode Island said every governor left the meeting stronger and more hopeful about the party’s future.
In Carmichaels Pennsylvania two miners remain trapped after a Friday fire. Drills reached 340 feet underground near the Nemacolin mine but sound equipment showed no signs of life as rescuers pressed to locate the men.
A waterfront blaze in Atlantic City NJ erupted with two explosions early today destroying six buildings and a fishing trawler. No injuries were reported and investigators had not yet estimated damage or determined a cause.

The varsity track team placed third with 92 points at the Kermit Invitational. Monahans topped the field with 134 points, while Kermit, Pecos and Brownfield followed. Key results included Steve Greenhill winning the Pecos 120 yd high hurdles and Doug Hathorn the 330 Intermediate hurdles.
Pecos High School freshmen trackers captured first place with 129 points in the 9th grade division at Mona Hansen last Friday. Andrews led eight teams with 106 points as Gary Clark took discus, Francisco Sandoval led relays, and Dennis Rayos swept hurdles and high jump placements.
Cynthia Suzanna Kesey, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Kesey, earns Baylor University's Dean's Distinguished List honors for the Fall Semester. She posted at least a 3.8 grade point average with 15 or more hours and is among 250 scholars, including 151 women and 99 men, to receive the honor. She is also among 123 students with straight A grades in all subjects.
Balmorhea schedules a two day cleanup campaign on Thursday and Friday April 1 and 2. Residents are urged to prepare yards and property by placing trash out for collection.
The Pecos Eagles split a doubleheader with Artesia, N.M., winning the opener 2-1 behind pitcher Jimmy White and home runs by Renee Galindo, Nolan Bates, and Chris Spray. In game two the Bulldogs won 22-18 as Pecos committed ten errors in the seventh. Spray took the loss and several pitchers, including David Maddux and Norman Tinkler, worked before Galindo secured the final out.

An essay contest for Pecos High School students on The Political Life of Grover Cleveland will award Manuel P. Hernandez Jr. first prize with a $25 savings bond and medal. Co-winner Ramona Carrasco and Manuel Sanchez win medals. awards presented March 31 at the Grover Cleveland exhibit opening.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Balmorhea First United Methodist Church for Eula Lee Baker age 81 lifelong resident of Saragosa Balmorhea area. Burial in Fairview Cemetery Pecos. Died Sunday in Medical Center Hospital Odessa born April 13 1899 daughter of Reeves County Sheriff Bud Frazier who was shot in office. Survived by son Bud F Baker Ft Stockton daughter Mrs James W Whitson Odessa three grandchildren two great grandchildren.
Residents of Pecos return home after a weekend convention in Midland Texas attended by about 969 people at the opening session. F R Brandt of the Watchtower Society led the ministry school and preached the public address What is Behind the Spirit of Rebellion to 1314 attendees. Pecos Chamber of Commerce officers and directors will attend a one day Chamber and Business Leaders Conference in Abilene on Wednesday March 31 sponsored by the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. Attendees include Ben Matta Mike Burkholder Wm. R. Bickley Woody Ivy Don Dean T.C. Slack and Harold Meyer. Registration begins at 9:00 am with adjournment about 3:30 pm.
