The Agriculture Department said on March 1 that more than seven million acres of crop and pasture land across the Great Plains from Texas to Montana were in condition to blow, highlighting a crucial battle between wind and spring vegetation to curb dust.
The Associated Press reports an early spring storm blankets the Southeast with snow ice and freezing rain. Nine inches fell at Clemson South Carolina as the system moved from the Ohio Valley into southern Virginia and West Virginia and down through the Carolinas.
Athens reports Premier George Papadopoulos missing from Independence Day celebrations fueling speculation he is ill or out of favor with fellow generals. As strongman of the 1967 coup group he has not appeared in public since January 22.
Lt Gen Aljandro Lanusse assumes the presidency tonight as head of Argentina's ruling junta, which retains Adm Pedro Guavi and Brig Gen Carlos Alberto Rey in the leadership. Lanusse becomes the top member in name and in fact after four days of collective rule.
House Democratic leaders seek to soften an end the war resolution before a party vote next week. The measure would put the House on record for withdrawing U S troops by December 31.
Three college students say a 25 minute private talk with President Nixon left them convinced he is genuinely concerned about youths but unsure how to communicate. Stanley Grimm of Fargo says Nixon feels deeply involved yet is isolated in his office and befuddled about handling the issue.
Washington AP: The Justice Department agrees to draft legislation giving Congress final say when a president withholds funds. Assistant Attorney General William H. Rehnquist said the department could not commit to support but was sympathetic to the bill’s purpose.
Fourteen months after the request, 13 black congressmen met President Nixon in Washington. They called the hour and a half session fruitful and said Nixon was sympathetic to their presentation. Rep. Charles Diggs noted judgment hinges on whether he adopts the 32-page set of recommendations.
Dr. Thomas E. Bryant told the House Labor and Education Committee that the government should restrict methadone use for heroin addicts until long-term effects are known. He said he is leery about supplying the general population of addicts, but can see a doctor treating a long-time patient in some cases.
West of the Pecos expects fair conditions tonight and Saturday with windy Saturday. Highs range from 74 to 95 degrees while overnight lows fall from 45 to 58 degrees.
William Perry of J.C. Penney Co promotes Sam Schulze from Pecos to Big Spring as regional manager effective March 31. Schulze, with the company since 1950 and Pecos store manager since May 1964, began in Roswell and has led Alpine and Pecos stores. He cites Pecos as a fine place to live for his wife Irene and their two sons.
Moore and Lukins were certified as aviation safety counselors by the FAA at a flight instructors meeting at the Holiday Inn. The pair will advise pilots and aviation groups, promote safety education, and help reduce hazards in the Pecos River to Eddy County region, where 30 accidents including nine fatalities occurred in 1970.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsors a basketball game at Pecos High School gym tonight. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students. High school coaches play against junior high coaches.
The local Future Homemakers of America chapter runs National FHA Week from March 28 to April 3 with church services, a Coke party for 8th grade girls, nursing home visit, a film screening, a patriotic day, and a Families Together theme. FHA president Wilinda Mosby leads daily devotional sessions as the national organization promotes care and community action. The state FHA meeting in Dallas April 23-24 will draw over 5,000 members with speakers Reverend Logan Cummings and Barbara Baley.
Mary Luz Hernandez, 21, was released on a $20,000 bond after a week in jail on murder with malice charges in the rifle death of Frank Alvarez, 19. Her brother Raymundo B. Hernandez, 17, was jailed Wednesday on murder charges and posted a $20,000 bond to await release.
City records report 41 375 88 in sales tax receipts for the final quarter of 1970, up 5 172 01 from 1969. Gross collections totaled 42 169 57, signaling solid business for Pecos during the period.
Police report a string of burglaries as pumps are stolen from residential yards. Amonario Ramos and John F Downs reported pumps missing or damaged, wires cut, and a hose severed. A 10 year old juvenile was detained after being found in a residence with stolen items. Vandalism included a Shamrock station window and church windows at St James Baptist. A black Starflight bicycle was recovered near 1619 Eddy.
The First National Bank of Pecos moves to computerized bookkeeping with operation starting September 1. President J T Moore Jr and Cashier Harold Elder tout faster, more accurate service and detailed statements, including daily balances and annual interest calculations. Savings accounts automate with quarterly statements and Forms 1099 issued yearly.
