The AFSC reports farm child labor as the third most hazardous industry, urging coverage by hazardous work laws. Senator Mathias says he will not join any anti Nixon movement and has no plans to participate in such a drive.
Rabbi Meir Kahane the Jewish Defense League leader addressed followers as 800 protesters were peacefully moved from a busy intersection in Washington DC. About 2 500 demonstrators gathered Sunday to protest Soviet treatment of Jews in Russia.
The capital will elect Tuesday a nonvoting delegate to Congress. Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy, a black Democrat and civil rights leader, is the favorite and pledges to use "raw naked power" against the "devils on that hill." The piece questions how much power a nonvoting congressman can wield.
AP reports Senator Henry M. Jackson of Washington, labeling himself an official non candidate, spent a social weekend with former President Lyndon B. Johnson and Mrs. Johnson at the Johnson ranch near Austin Texas. Jackson said politics were discussed but not at length and offered no exciting details.
U.S. intelligence reports say the Soviet Union has supplied about 90 additional MIG21 interceptors to Egypt since late last year and also strengthened its SU7 and earlier MIG fighters. Egypt now reportedly fields 220 MIG21s 206 MIG17s 115 MIG11s and 120 SU7s.
The Associated Press reports a cold front hit the central United States with zero degree readings in Montana. Snow spread from the Rockies to the eastern Great Lakes while the South enjoyed a warming trend and Florida set record lows during the weekend. Early morning temps ranged from 4 in Lewistown Montana to 69 in Key West Florida.
Four of five ousted Russian diplomats depart Mexico City on a plane to Brussels after Mexican authorities ordered their exit over alleged Marxist plots to overthrow President Luis Echevarria. One diplomat assaulted a journalist and another hid behind a bouquet of carnations as Charged affairs Dimitry Krakonov stayed behind to brief Ambassador Igor Kolosovsky scheduled to meet Echevarria.
About 450 guests attended the annual Pecos Chamber banquet at Pecos Valley Country Club with humor from outgoing president Bob Hughes and incoming president Bob Bickley. Gov. Preston Smith entertained and noted the upside down Texas flag as a joke. Jane Withers Dameron won the Award of Merit, Richard Naylor earned Citizen of the Year, and Ben Matta received Director of the Year. Funeral services for Mrs. Ann Cooper of Perens will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Homer Nowell officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. She died at Reeves County Memorial Hospital after months of illness. Survived by husband Tex Cooper, siblings in Ohio, Michigan, California, and Florida, her father Everett Eubaugh, and fifteen years as a Pecos resident with Cooper Sign Company on East Highway 80.
West of the Pecos area is fair to night and Tuesday with cooler conditions tonight. Lows range from 28 to 42 while high temperatures on Tuesday reach 63 to 80.
Mary Luz Hernandez, 21, held on $20,000 bond after a fatal shooting that killed Frank Alvarez, 19, in Pecos. The incident followed a rock throwing dispute involving Hernandez's father and Alvarez, with two other youths present. A 8 year old boy was treated after a spent bullet entered his side. grave doubts remain over the motive and location of the shooting. Francisco Molinar Alvarez, 612 Almond St, Pecos, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Technical Sergeant Jesus Anaya of Pecos Texas is cited as part of the 313th Tactical Airlift Wing Forbes AFB Kansas for the U S Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The unit commended for mission success humanitarian relief and disaster aid including 24000 pounds of supplies to Costa Rica and flood aid in Rossville Kansas.
Bob Faulkner service manager at Pecos Motors will receive a Silver Medallion from Ford Motor Co at the annual Medallion Managers Award Banquet. The event is at the Sheridan Hotel in Dallas on March 27 and his wife Linda will attend.
Pecos freshman team scored 173 points to outpace district rivals at Andrews track meet. Francisco Sandoval led event wins in the 440 yard relay and the 330 yard dash, while Dennis Rayos won the 76 yard high hurdles and Dennis Rayes added multiple top finishes.
A Pecos notice invites interested people to a 7 30 PM meeting at Security State Bank coffee room for the Little League baseball program. The league seeks coaches and managers for the Cardinals and Indians teams to support the boys local youth sports effort.
In Pecos at Jaycee Park the Pecos B team fell 11-10 to Midland B in the title game after a late inning comeback. Pecos had earlier beaten Ft Stockton 18-2 and Monahans 4-2 to reach the final. Monahans defeated Crane 4-1 and Kermit 11-3 to win the varsity tournament. The B team travels to Carlsbad next, while Carlsbad varsity visits Pecos at 4 p.m.
