East Texas reports suggest a small tornado struck rural structures east of Lufkin overnight with no injuries. Lufkin measured .53 inch rainfall as a Pacific front eased, while forecast calls for partly cloudy skies through Thursday and mild afternoons.
Pecos Eagles baseball dominates Jal New Mexico 9 to 0 as Ernie Calanchi pitches four innings and David Maddux finishes with three. Chavez Bates Galindo Calanchi and White key hits and runs. The Eagles score nine on ten hits with four Jal errors. The Eagle B team hosts Kermit and varsity meets Jal again Friday at 4 p.m.

The American Legion observes its 52nd birthday Monday at 7 30 p.m. with a party at Legion Hall on South Cedar Street and 9th. Coffee and sandwiches will be served to all servicemen active and inactive and their wives. Frank Kelley is commander of the local post.
Pecos Archery Club invites the public to visit the Balmorhea Highway range and join a club shoot on Sunday March 14 starting at 1 30 p m. Members invite newcomers to see the range and try archery as the club showcases improvements.
The third annual Area IV Youth Leadership Conference will be held March 12 and 13 in Lubbock Texas with about 50 West Texas schools and 600 students. Contest events include Ten Key Adding Machine Production Typing and Bookkeeping Proficiency.
The Passion Play depicting the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ will be presented at Santa Rosa Parish Hall Sunday March 14 at 4 p.m. Rev Fr Jesus Quintero of St. Gertrude's Catholic Church Grandfalls directs with local actors led by Pedro Garcia of Odessa as Christ. Admission is $1 for adults and 25 cents for students.
J B Kirklin of Pecos Texas heads the National Cotton Farmers Information Committee and accuses the Agriculture Department of a high pressure coverup of the 1971 cotton program. He says net weight payments cut about 4 20 per bale and cites reduced loan rates and loss of quality premiums as harms. He expects Senate subcommittee hearings next week to reveal the truth.
Mr and Mrs Ray Golden will attend the University Recognition Service at Texas Tech University in Lubbock to honor their son Gordon for scholarship and leadership. Gordon, a Pecos High School graduate, is a freshman pre med student at Tech. The event is Sunday March 14 at 2 p.m. in the municipal auditorium.
An Agriculture Conference will be held Thursday March 11 at 9:00 a.m. in Pecos Community Center. J T Moore Jr. chairs the event with participation from three USDA agencies and the Texas Soil Conservation Service to hear local farm problems and seek profitable solutions. Representatives from Washington and Temple will join to assist Reeves County farmers and ranchers.
Bonds were posted for two of five youths charged with statutory rape after an incident Monday night in a gravel pit south of Pecos. Ronald Eamon 19 and Bobby Teichman 19 were released from Reeves County jail, while David Beauchamp 18 Stephen Burkholder 17 and John Burkholder 18 had previously posted bonds. Authorities filed charges based on statements from two minor girls.
