A psychiatrist testified Benjamin Mendoza, Bolivian painter, is insane in the trial over his attempt to stab Pope Paul VI at Manila airport on November 27. The defense had Dr. Rodolfo Laserna assess Mendoza, who has suffered from insanity for a long time.
Capt. Ernest Medina will testify at Lt. William Calley’s murder trial, according to his lawyer Gerald Alch. Medina's testimony is expected this week and is described as a public, sworn statement.
An American peace group says Hanoi’s chief negotiator Xuan Thuy told them he met in Paris with U S Ambassador David K E Bruce in an effort to secure a date for American withdrawal. Thuy reportedly spoke with 171 Americans from 41 states who traveled to Paris via the American Friends Service Committee and the Fellowship for Reconciliation for three hours.

Delores Pullard Johnson of DeQuincy Louisiana billed as the world’s tallest woman 8 feet tall and 430 pounds is slated for brain surgery at Methodist Hospital in Houston. Doctors advised removing a tumor at the base of the brain to prevent blindness. The 24 year old woman has been wheelchair bound for 10 years following a childhood injury.
The freshman track team won the 9th grade division of the Seminole meet, with Pecos totaling 130 points to claim first place. Levelland took second with 88 and Kermit third with 66 as ten teams competed. individual winners included Alan Callison and Dennis Rayos in several hurdles and sprint events.
The City Council accepted Getty Oil Company’s bid, represented by F H Mills, for a five year paid up lease on mineral rights held by the city Pecos Barstow school district and Reeves County. Bids also from Wilderspen House and Continental Oil Company were lower. Douglas Robison and Pecos Fresh compete in local track meet events with multiple placements.
Only two Pecos High School players advanced deep in the Odessa High School tournament held Friday and Saturday. Jackie Hamilton and James Robert Brownlee reached the doubles quarterfinals before losing to a Kermit doubles team.
A grand jury indicted Rene Adolfo Guzman and Leonardo Ramos Lopez on murder charges for the February 15 deputy sheriff slayings along the Trinity River. Also named were Thomas Rodriguez for assault to murder a police officer, two women for accessory to murder, and Guzman’s brother Moises, initially charged but not present.
Final rites for Rosa Betty Glier 85 were held Saturday at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Edwin Griffith officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery. Born August 1 1885 in Austria she had lived in Pecos since 1910 dying after a long illness Friday in Pecos Nursing Home. Survivors include two sons George and Frank and a daughter Mrs J B Kirklin all of Pecos eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Pecos High School choirs and stage band depart at 7 a.m. Thursday for performances in Van Horn Fabens and El Paso. They return Friday around 5 15 p m. Accompanying teachers are Mrs. Tommy Peer and Mrs A Nail.
Marilyn Eisenwine, a fresh man at the University of Dallas, earns Dean's List for fall semester with a 3.5 GPA. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman Eisenwine of Pecos, she attends a co educational university founded in 1956 with about 1350 students on a 1000 acre site between Dallas and Fort Worth.
Pecos High School concert bands competed at Sweetwater winning both Div I and Div II honors. Symphonic band led by Bill Carrico earned Div I sight reading and Div II concert in AAA. Charles Nail’s band won Div I sight reading and Div II concert in AA. Event previews upcoming UIL competition.
Chamber of Commerce directors will gather tomorrow at noon in the Banquet Room for the monthly meeting. Special guests will include the newly elected directors for the upcoming year’s activities.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Banquet and Membership Meeting on Friday March 19 at 7 30 p m at Pecos Valley Country Club with Governor Preston Smith as the guest speaker. Tickets are five dollars each with priority for members. calls to 445 2406 for tickets.
Representatives from Pecos High School Student Council attended the West Texas Forum for Student Councils meeting at Permian High School in Odessa. The Pecos group included Ronnie Bukter Scott Lewis Brenda Moon Lisa Peyton Betty Hartnett Nancy Box and sponsor Mrs Mary Frances Horton joined by Roger Russell. Workshops covered topics including dress codes among other issues.
I G Shorty Shepherd of Barstow died on arrival at Memorial Hospital after an apparent heart attack. Arrangements are pending with Pecos Funeral Home.
The Department of Health Education and Welfare approves a 13314 grant for a nine month Head Start program in Balmorhea Reeves County. Administrated by the Community Council of Reeves County Rachel Kirkwood director the program serves twenty preschool children from low income families with health dental exams and preschool training to prepare them for enrollment in regular classes.
Fair conditions persist west of the Pecos through Tuesday. Tonight will be warmer with lows from 22 to 38. Tuesday brings mild temperatures with highs from 65 to 80 and light winds.
Lynette Bjornson a Pecos descendant and Evangel College senior music education major will perform an all Beethoven recital March 11 at 8 p.m. in Evangel College fine arts auditorium Springfield Missouri. She has been pianist for school choirs and bands and soloist in the Evangel Chorale. Betty Palma will serve as second pianist.
Mrs. Mary Ann Rowan of the Texas Heart Association will lead a Growth and Development workshop at the West Texas Education Center building in Terminal from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 10. Topics cover the heart circulatory system congenital defects growth hindrances and tobacco effects. Open to teachers nurses and the public.
