Oil Royalty Fight in Hugoton Ends in Battle Victory
About 30 000 royalty owners in the Hugoton gas field won an eight year billion dollar dispute with four petroleum companies over helium royalties. The 10th U S Circuit Court in Denver ordered royalties paid and sent the case back to Wichita for helium value determination. The suit began in 1963 led by Henry C Hitch Jr and Ralph Grounds, seeking 1.8 billion dollars. The outcome hinges partly on the Nixon administration decision on ending the helium conservation program.
