Local riders and merchants hype an upcoming Pecos rodeo with plans for a high purse and a special jerk-down roping event. Participants praise the town’s preparations, gear up in western wear, and urge residents to attend to boost tourism and local pride.
The 14th Golden Girl of the Old West will be named at about 10 p.m. in Pecos High School auditorium after a three phase competition among nine contestants led by Cindy Scott’s successor. Contestants include Susan Dennison and Kim Allen with out-of-town belles from Monahans and Odessa as heaviest contenders. Admission is 1.50 for adults and 1 for children with proceeds supporting the West of the Pecos Museum.

Rodeo fans can buy a Pecos edition belt buckle honoring the world s first rodeo in 1883. The special edition buckle costs 9 dollars and is sold at Pecos Saddle Shop Rediger s Pharmacy and the Chamber of Commerce office.
Chamber of Commerce manager says entry books for the wild mule race and the new wild cow milking contest will stay open until the chutes open. Teams of two men rope and milk wild cows with the fastest measured milking time winning. Contest needs more contestants or it may be canceled. The events run with the 47th annual rodeo's four 8:30 p.m. performances starting Thursday.
As a Bicentennial project the Business and Professional Women's Club dedicates a memorial tablet at 9 a.m. Thursday on the front steps of the courthouse. The ceremony honors local servicemen who died in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The event will be short and informal with time for other fourth activities. "Everyone is invited to attend," said president Cathy Ashley.
