Five hundred National Guardsmen were sent home as calm returned to Jacksonville East Side after four nights of unrest. Police reported five minor firebombings. 274 people were arrested, with all but 18 released on bond. Remaining detainees faced charges of arson looting assault and extortion.
Earl Manning, a 26 year old former Marine who spent two years as an unpaid undercover informer in the drug world, announces his retirement from the role. His work led to nearly 300 arrests in North Carolina and he notes his appearance drew attention at crackdowns. Manning and his wife expect a baby.
Bill Moyers told the American Library Association that the New York Times will likely print a Pentagon Vietnam War evolution report despite a Justice Department struggle. He cautioned against prior restraint and urged upholding constitutional protection of a free press.

A rain band stretched from the Ohio Valley to southeastern New Mexico with Tucumcari New Mexico recording over two inches and Cleveland over an inch and a half. The House Immigration and Nationality Subcommittee opened hearings on illegal aliens with Rep. Peter W. Rodino stating severe penalties are needed to curb flows to California and noting about 350000 were deported last year. Leonard Gilman of INS cited employers hiring hundreds of illegals and smugglers earning 50 to 300 dollars per alien.
Tech Names Honor List lists students from Pecos and eight Texas Tech colleges who earned dean's list status this spring. Recipients must hold a 3.0 GPA and register for up to 12 semester hours. The eight colleges include Agricultural Sciences Arts and Sciences Home Economics Education Business Administration the Graduate School and the School of Law.
Mrs. J C Williams wife of a state narcotics agent was abducted from a Fort Worth supermarket by three hippie type suspects. They placed a bag over her head and drove her to Lake Arlington where she was beaten before being released. Police said the motive was retaliation for her husband’s arrests.
Dr Frances Phillips dean of the Graduate Division at Sul Ross State University is selected for the 1972 73 and 37th edition of Who's Who in America Admission is based on prominence in meritorious lines of effort She earned a PhD in history in 1956 from the University of New Mexico and was named to Phi Kappa Phi Fulbright Scholar 1954 55 Directory of American Scholars since 1957 Who's Who in American Women since 1968 69 selected to Who's Who in the South and Southwest 1969 70 president of the Association of Texas Graduate Schools 1969 70 and has held leadership in various education and church bodies.
In Belton Texas the murder trial of Rene Guzman and Leonardo Lopez begins in district court for the February 15 Trinity River levee killings of three sheriff's deputies. Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade and state prosecutors plan to seek the electric chair.
Orb Rowden, publisher of the Enterprise, resigns effective July 1 to buy a commercial printing shop and office supply business in Lewistown Pennsylvania. He has served as publisher since August 1 1968 after Fred Janca. Rowden's career began in Lovington New Mexico in 1957 and includes roles in Pecos and Brownfield. He and his wife Jody have three children and plan to move once arrangements are complete. Announcement on July who will replace him for the Enterprise will be made.
City Council moves to create a bridle path to engage youths and expand recreation for horse lovers. Project aims to provide outdoor activity and community space as part of municipal development.
Judges for the beard grow ing contest will be local barbers Williford Wagher Lessie Woodward and Don Lloyd. The event occurs at 8 15 pm just before the second performance of the West of the Pecos Rodeo on Thursday evening July 1. Reeves County state senator W E Snelson becomes president pro tempore of the Texas Senate and moves to third in the line of succession to the governor. Lt Gov Ben Barnes described him as a leader for all seasons. Snelson represents the expansive 25th district, spanning about 45 000 square miles in West Texas, and will serve at least one day as governor when the top two officials are out of state.
