Rising energy costs threaten irrigated Texas farming
TAES scientists warn that higher natural gas prices raise irrigation pumping costs, threatening output on major irrigated acreages in Trans Pecos and Texas High Plains. They note irrigation sustains 60 percent of Texas crops despite 35 percent of land under irrigation, and propose efficiency upgrades and new crop systems to save energy.
