Dr. L Nelson Bell was elected moderator at the General Assembly in Montreal. The 112th annual meeting closed after considering merger with United Presbyterian Church. A 450 member body approved consolidating 14 boards into a single general executive board, the first major reorganization in 23 years. Synods in the Southern Presbyterian church would drop from 15 to seven.
