A wave of fires, many blamed on fire bombs, swept Albuquerque as violence flared between police and youths. In two days 15 people were shot, over 250 arrested, police gear damaged and businesses looted or burned with damage near 3 million dollars. Disorder began after police tried to arrest youths at Roosevelt Park for public drinking.
Homicide detectives hunted four men and a motive in the bloodiest Detroit crime, a narcotics center mass killing on the Near Northwest Side. Seven young people, three men and four women, aged 18 to 27, were shot dead and another man wounded early Monday as four men fled a two story flat after a dozen shots. Evidence included cartridges of at least three calibers.
President Luis Echeverria orders a probe into armed civilian participation in a student demonstration repression last week. Officials say the government bears no relation to the groups that attacked the protest as the administration seeks to ease tensions with youth.
Senator Barry Goldwater recalls telling Lyndon B. Johnson during the 1964 campaign that both should tell Americans the war would widen with bombing and troops regardless of who won. He says Johnson would have beaten him worse if he had agreed, noting Johnson's landslide victory with about 43 million votes to 27 million.
The nation experienced mostly clear and mild conditions with thundershowers in the Plains through the Mid Atlantic. A tornado was sighted near Imperial Texas and funnel clouds reported near Charleston South Carolina and Dicklinson North Carolina. Hail struck San Angelo Texas and dense hail near Eads Colorado. Damaging winds occurred near Briston Tennessee and Athens Georgia. Rainfall approached an inch in Hickory North Carolina. Overnight temperatures ranged from 35 in Houston Maine to 91 in Needles California.
AP reports only two of the nine babies born to Mrs. Leonard Brodrick remained alive 60 hours after birth as two more died early today and Monday night. The first-born girl weighed 2 pounds 2 ounces and appeared to have the best chance of survival, while the others showed less hopeful signs despite earlier bulletins noting sizes.
The Agriculture Department reports 7,068,000 head in feedlots as of June 1 across Arizona California Colorado Iowa Nebraska and Texas, up six percent from a year earlier. Texas leads with 1,683,000 head, up 30 percent. May figures show 37 percent more cattle in Texas feeders compared with last year.
Texas Ranger Red Arnold killed one man and wounded another in a dawn highway incident that left four officers captured at gunpoint. The slain was Andy West of Franklin County Mount Vernon. critically wounded was Charles Henry West, 37. The brothers reportedly stopped cars on U S 271 near Pittsburgh, disarmed a night watchman and officers before Arnold struck.
Funeral services for Carmen Quinonoz 19 are pending at Pecos Funeral Home after a SH 20 wreck Sunday afternoon near Wickett. The 1968 Volkswagen overturned three times throwing Quinonoz to her death.
Funeral services for Mrs. O. Lewis were set for tomorrow at 2 P.M. in Olton. She died Sunday afternoon at Olton Hospital, and her son Derwood Lewis of Pecos received word prompting his and his wife’s travel to Olton.
Lewis family of Pecos shows their two year old quarterhorse stallion Son Dance Image, out of Stephen's Breeze by Fathers Image, winning the American Quarter Horse Association silver trophy in Kermit and earning the grand champion stallion honor. He already held a gold trophy in the Kermit meet and now has five ribbons and two trophies in his awards collection.
Michael K. Pittman of Greenville was convicted in 148th District Court of a first offense marijuana possession and received a ten year prison term after his prior record was presented to the jury. Five suspects were arrested at a local service station after a marijuana search revealed a large quantity, with four others pleading guilty to probated sentences.
Joe Carpenter, manager of the Texas Employment Commission, was installed commander of Baker-Curtis Post No. 6437 VFW on Monday night at 704 West Second Street. Others taking office include H.J. Meyers senior vice commander George Vasques junior vice commander Harry Boehnemann judge advocate J A Shoemake quartermaster Dr Bruce Hay surgeon and I D Hopkins chaplain.

The Reeves County School Board delayed action on Toyah Independent School District annexation amid ongoing court proceedings and a busy court schedule. Toyah, with about 50 students, has fought annexation since a 1968 dispute over open meeting procedures. The board, led by President John Dorr, plans to reconvene July 15 to decide further steps.
Fair and warm conditions extend tonight and Wednesday. Highs reach 90 to 102 degrees, with overnight lows from 50 at higher elevations to 72 in the extreme south.

Mrs. Attie Mae Pearson died this morning at Knodes sa Medical Center Hospital. She was wife of Charles W. Pearson Jr, a Pecos area farmer for twenty years. Services at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Survived by husband, a son Captain Todd Pearson of Webb Air Force Base, a granddaughter, her parents, and four brothers.
Criminal charges of negligent homicide and other traffic violations filed against Burton G. Whitlock driver of the Greyhound bus involved in a fatal crash that killed Tome mie M. Bouldin of Altadena California and Brenham Texas. Whitlock remains hospitalized in Abilene after being rescued from the wreckage and receiving treatment for lacerations and a possible leg fracture. The pre dawn collision with a grain truck near Pyote left four people severely injured and others treated and released. An autopsy confirmed the woman died of internal injuries at the scene five miles west of Pyote.
Adri an McCutcheon sixteen daughter of Mr and Mrs William Willis McCutcheon will represent Balmorhea as Western Belle in the Golden Girl of the Old West pageant. A Balmorhea High School junior she starred in the one act play this year and serves as a varsity cheerleader. She belonged to Future Homemakers of America chapel Rainbow Girl and attended St Marys Hall where she played varsity basketball and was a dorm officer. She attends the Balmorhea Methodist Church.
