Warrel L. Baker of Dallas says further price hikes are needed as domestic drilling remains weak. The active rotary rig count slid from 814 in mid March to around 900 in May and then to 858 on June 7, far below last year's 1010.
Mrs Grady Rogers 55 of Floyd New Mexico died in Roosevelt General Hospital after being swept from her car on a rain flooded dirt road south of Portales Saturday State Police said she drove off rain flooded NM 18 and got out as it went under water dying of exhaustion and exposure.
Beaumont police report Claude L. Mathis, 48, found stabbed to death around 2 am by a passing motorist. Investigators believe robbery as motive, but the cash register was locked and nothing appeared missing.
Boston AP Richard A Callahan national executive officer of the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs says the pharmaceutical industry bears responsibility for drug abuse due to unlimited production. He notes the industry's output far exceeds normal legitimate needs.
Actor Van Heflin, 60, remains in critical condition after a heart attack at his apartment pool on June 6. Cedars of Lebanon Hospital officials said he was found clinging to a pool ladder, unconscious, and taken to the cardiac care unit for treatment.
The AP reports Soviet republics held parliamentary and local elections with Nikita Khrushchev present and three cosmonauts voting by radio. Turnout was expected to exceed 99 percent, and officials noted party visits for unchecked voters.
Frank Sinatra announced his last performance at a charity gala raising $800,000 for the Motion Picture and Television Relief Fund. The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that cities facing school and public facility integration orders may close swimming pools and other public facilities to both blacks and whites. The decision rejected a Jackson Mississippi group’s plea, holding no illegal discrimination when neither race may use the facilities.
Two groups of American Indians occupied empty buildings at deactivated Nike missile sites in California and Illinois. In Chicago more than 50 Indians moved into several unlocked structures at an abandoned Nike site near Belmont Harbor on Lake Michigan.
A one car crash on Interstate 20 east of Wickett killed Carmen Quinones of Pecos. The 1968 Volkswagen, owned by Thomas Herrera of Pecos, skidded after the driver attempted to pass a pickup and rolled three times. Quinones was thrown from the car and died. Kathy Acosta of Pecos was in critical condition at Ward Memorial Hospital. Occupants Margie Cordero Bella Hernandez and Fiva Orona, all Pecos residents, faced warrants. Cordero and Elva Orona remained jailed on bonds of 5000 dollars. Authorities say marijuana was scattered in the vehicle.
Jim L. Hooker announces Ronald Deane as the new Museum of the Southwest director. Deane, currently BYU Art Gallery director in Provo, will assume duties in Midland in July with wife Sandra and three children. a BYU graduate and former Met Museum trainee.
The Pecos-Barstow Consolidated Independent School District board met June 10 confirming July 8 as bid opening for a $1,250,000 bond issue. The meeting covered tax plan changes, current bills, and a pilot plan for new vocational facilities. July 8 at 5:30 p.m. was set for bid calls and the next regular session.
At a Pecos Valley Masonic Lodge meeting last night at the Masonic Hall five members received 25 year pins while two members earned 50 year pins and certificates. Dinners and speeches highlighted the event with Sam Hilburn of Midland delivering the keynote on Masonic tenets.
Word arrived of the death of Mrs. O Lewis 76 of Olton widow of Lewis. She died in Olton hospital after illness on Saturday and services are pending relatives arrival. She lived in Olton five years after moving from a Wheeler County farm and is survived by her husband their son four daughters 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Mrs. H. D. Dickens 42 died at 9 15 a m Saturday in Memorial Hospital Pecos. Services set for 10 a m Monday at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Born January 23 1929 in St Louis Missouri she moved to Pecos nine years ago from Brownfield. Survived by husband H D Sonny Dickens and two sisters Shirley Logan Bellview Illinois and Mary Katherine Hastings Pecos.
Sgt. Elvis Lamb, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Lamb, called his mother from London on June 14 to wish her a happy birthday. He serves in the Air Force stationed there after three years of service and is a Pecos High School graduate from 1968. He is due for discharge in about a year.
Carolyn Clark of Pecos High School is highlighted as the Golden Girl of the old West nominee for Beta Sigma Phi. A 17 year old junior born in Dhahran Saudi Arabia, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Clark.
