Cotton demand rises as yields fall in 1972 outlook
Texas cotton expert Fred Elliott says 1972 will be critical as demand grows for a fiber that is increasingly colorful and casual. A new campaign titled Better Yields of Quality Cotton for Profit and Market Growth coordinates national and state efforts to boost production. Texas 1971 lint yield averaged 263 pounds per acre, down from 315 in 1970 and 410 in 1968, with Beltwide average slipping from 516 to 438 pounds per acre last season due to dry spring and summer and wet fall hampering harvests. The national carryover for 1971–72 ends July 31 at about 3.25 million bales, barely a four‑month supply. A better season yield could boost payments in 1975 and aid financing.

Soviet visit may see U S farm trade boom
College Station Texas A and M economist Dr Lonnie L Jones says eased Soviet U S relations could unlock a big market for U S consumer and industrial goods but requires negotiation and compromise. He notes Russia needs U S technology and hard currency while Russia faces a soft ruble and limited trade currency. Early trade likely centers on grain with potential expansion into livestock and feed, oil and agricultural products amid political uncertainty.
