Crowds packed London for the silver jubilee as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip rode in the Golden State Coach from Buckingham Palace to St Paul’s Cathedral for the thanksgiving service. The procession included Prince Charles and Princess Anne with heavy royal guard and gun salutes.

City officers honored by national law enforcement group

The American Law Enforcement Officers Association announced May 2 that Pecos Police Department officials Armando Gil Butler Smith and George Keely received outstanding commendations. Chief Charles Smith and Officer Jim Wilson were awarded distinguished honors for service to Pecos. The association, based in New Orleans, cites valor and civilian assistance in the war on crime.

Hotline answers cattle referendum questions in Texas

The Texas Beef Development Taskforce sets a toll free Hotline 1-800-682-4106 to assist cattle producers with the Beef Referendum. Registration runs June 6-17 at about 2,000 county ASCS offices nationwide, with actual voting July 5-15 at ASCS offices.

Bald eagles sent to Lufkin Zoo from Rusk County

Two fledgling American bald eagles found Monday at the Summitt Oaks Center in Rusk County are now nesting at the Lufkin zoo. The birds, about two weeks old, were found in a plastic container during a routine extinguisher check and were confiscated by Rusk County game warden Frank Hudson. Zoo director Gordon Henley cautioned they face roughly a 50 percent survival chance.
