Two days of rioting in Chicago's Humboldt Park left two men dead and at least 133 injured including 38 police officers. Police reported rocks and bottles flying between crowds of mostly Hispanic youths and officers as Molotov cocktails lit streets and a downtown county building blast preceded the unrest.
U S District Judge Sirica set June 22 as the deadline for H R Haldeman and John N Mitchell to begin serving their 22 to 8 year sentences for Watergate. They may surrender at 10 a m or be admitted by noon and face transfers to facilities in Lompoc California and Allenwood Pennsylvania respectively.
The University Interscholastic League releases state tournament pairings in Austin. Thursday at 1 p.m. Class 3A semifinals pit DeSoto against Pecos and Uvalde against Waco Midway. At 7 p.m. Class 4A semifinals feature Duncanville versus Victoria Stroman. Friday hosts the Class 3A and 4A finals at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. respectively.

A hit and run left a five year old girl dead at the scene on Friday night in the 2000 block of Ivey Street. Police seek witnesses and the driver responsible for the fatal crash.
Partly cloudy with no significant temperature changes through Tuesday and scattered storms tonight. Highs in the 90s with humidity. Police report the fleeing vehicle driver is believed to be a white Anglo male 22 to 25 with long blond hair and possibly a mustache. Blood drive nets 25 pints at the community center sponsored by the Lions Club. An ambulance dispatched to 401 N Elm for a man who shot himself in the right leg while in a car. Antonio Lujan Rodriguez was taken to Memorial Hospital and said he planned to hunt Sunday. No one was around the car when the self inflicted wound occurred.
In a 5 to 4 ruling the Supreme Court invalidated Louisiana's law that required execution for those who kill police officers. Justices noted mitigating factors can exist and spared Harry Roberts, a 19 year old convicted in the 1974 killing of New Orleans officer Dennis McInerney. Dissenters urged upholding the statute.
Former premier Bulent Ecevit leads in official returns as his Republican People’s Party projects 222 seats in the 450 member National Assembly. Vote tallies show 40.4 percent for Ecevit against 36 percent for Suleyman Demirel’s Justice Party amid violence reports and graft accusations.
Two pregnant women freed from a train siege in northern Holland report that the remaining 53 hostages are in good condition amid great psychological pressure. Justice officials say no near end to the crisis as mediators seek progress with South Moluccan militants.
