Special session on redistricting begins in Texas
Gov. Perry called a special session to start May 27 to ratify federal court ordered redistricting plans for Texas House, Senate, and U.S. House elections. Bills HB 1-4 and SB 1-4 seek updates, with HB 2/SB 2 facing the least resistance but facing potential court challenges over minority opportunity and dilution concerns. Senate and House committees met late May and early June amid brief hearings and planned regional hearings, while Comptroller Susan Combs announced she will not seek reelection in 2014, with Sen. Hegar eyeing the post.
