Miss Cotton Crowning Tops Pecos Cotton Week
Pecos will celebrate Cotton Week June 30 to August 5 with a proclamation signed by Mayor E W Schmidt to honor the cotton industry. The August 1 crowning of Miss Cotton of Pecos includes 17 local entrants led by Kim Blackwell and others, judged by the Honeystones and a women’s barbershop chorus. Tickets for the dinner and pageant cost five dollars.

The Pecos Santa Fe freight agency will close on July 28 ending current duty at the office. Local agent J. L. Gilbert Gomez confirms he is the only employee. He may be transferred to Carlsbad or Dexter New Mexico. Average earnings of half the nation’s workers rose to 135 39 with a 2 18 dollar gain per paycheck and a longer work week.

Migrant Summer Institute Attends Summer School Meet

Locusts and June Beetles Emerge in Pecos
Linda Oestreicher reports Pecos sees more locusts and June beetles this year due to a warmer winter. Entomologist Bill Bagley says they pose little plant threat, though 17 year cicadas emerge from underground, shed shells, and the male buzzes loudly. Locusts are not native and are usually not pests, but sprays may be used if numbers rise.
