A Dallas corporation director helped Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes borrow funds to buy stock, in a case tied to a federal securities suit. The disclosure followed Barnes saying he recommended the stock and sought the loan. Officials announced bank examinations and proposed inquiries into the banking department as regulators pursue collateral concerns and potential conservatorship actions.
Washington AP Allen J. Ellender, 80, takes command of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee after the death of Richard Russell. Ellender becomes senior member and president pro tempore, placing him third in line for the presidency. He plans a seventh term in 1972 and aims to surpass Carl Hayden’s record. Ellender pursues old fashioned, hands on legislation with long hearings and on the ground investigations.
