The column notes Pecos posted rising postal receipts and oil activity while 1938 national downturn eased. Gas meters rose from 460 in 1931 to 903 now, construction continues, and population roughly doubles since 1930. Optimism runs through bankers and merchants as a 1939 upswing is forecast.
Mr and Mrs R E Resley of Fort Stockton announced the birth of a girl in a Pecos hospital on Wednesday.
The Pecos High School band, led by Wesley C. May, won first place and a $50 prize in the visiting bands division of the El Paso Sun Carnival parade. Kathleen Lewis placed second in the Queen’s court contest. Norma Lausk of Carlsbad won the beauty title and an all expense paid trip to Hollywood. About 500 Pecos residents attended the three day event with funds from a post season football game covering travel and expenses.
John Coalson a West Texas settler and one of Pecos oldest cowboys died Saturday night at his niece’s home in Pecos after a several week illness. Born September 8 1863 in Mandarville Texas he rode in Pecos first rodeo in 1882 and later ranched in New Mexico before returning to Pecos Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Chamber of Commerce measures for Pecos show growth in 1938 across gas meters water meters telephones postal receipts and construction. Outgoing mail and Christmas stamp sales hit records while bank deposits rose by over 50 000 and combined bank assets surpassed two million dollars signaling a hopeful year ahead.
H F Anthony says a large West Texas delegation will attend the Hickory Shirt Jackson Day Dinner in the Crystal Palace Ballroom Baker Hotel. G A Sadler will speak at the $2 plate event with more than two thousand expected to attend from Monahans Midland Odessa Kermit Wink Fort Stockton and nearby towns.
The district grand jury returned three indictments on burglary charges this week. District Attorney William L. Kerr said the three cases will be heard in district court on January 16. Civil cases and divorce suits have occupied court time this week.
Season on all migratory birds including ducks geese and brant closed December 29. Possession of any such birds after January 8 is prohibited with violators facing heavy fines. Ten days after season end allowed to dispose of birds. Quail season remains open until January 16.
Pecos Lions Club members traveled to Grandfalls on Thursday night to form a Lions club there. Plans for the trip were discussed at Wednesday's luncheon. Supt. R Henry Blackwell spoke about the high school band and football team trip to the Sun Carnival in El Paso.
County Agent Ted Johnston released a total of 5495 acres for Reeves county cotton producers for 1939. The allotment mirrors 1938 in total though the average per farm is about three percent lower due to higher local production and cultivation.
Sim Reeves of Balmorhea and J W Brooks of Pecos were named Wednesday to complete Reeves county's agricultural conservation committee. They will serve as farm representatives alongside R L Parker, elected last week as ranching representative, with C O Finley as alternate. John Coffey of Balmorhea was elected farm alternate.
Mayor Toliver predicts 1939 will be a standout year for Pecos as a $105,450 PWA sewer project including a disposal plant joins upgrades to the water works from 1935. City officials seek to curb artesian wells, repair paving, and push for the 56 mile Pecos Fort Stockton highway with the Highway Commission.
A. R. Eppenauer sold 64 producing wells on 2915 acres across six West Texas counties to Intercoast Petroleum Corp. for 1.9 million dollars. The sale includes oil and gas rights with a mineral reservation, while Eppenauer keeps other interests and cattle ranching. J. A. MacDermott will manage operations. Edward E. Duffey named Superintendent of Production. Executive offices to be set in Midland.
Pecos school board elected Mrs. Raymon Pouncey Wednesday to fill an elementary vacancy. She begins January 16 and will finish out the year. Miss Cathryn Douglas resigns to marry. Coach A. E. Kotrola is reassigned to Kermit as head football coach and will stay until a successor is found. Superintendent R Henry Blackwell has begun urging applications.
Arlene Bowie born Sunday at 10 10 am marks Pecos first baby of the year. Parents Mr and Mrs Arlen Bowie receive gifts from 16 Pecos merchants including Ben's Pharmacy Home Furniture Farnum's Dairy Pecos Mercantile Sander's Drug Pecos Drug Co G Morrison Ben Franklin Store Leader Grocery Style Shop Zimmer Beauty Shop Grand Theatre Wadley May Clothiers and Jack's Liquor Store.
District Attorney William L. Kerr departed this morning for Austin to attend a directors' meeting of the Texas Bar Association.
Pecos deposits across two banks totaled 1 844 235 on December 31, up from 1 788 207 the prior year and higher than two years earlier. Combined bank assets stood at 2 045 132, compared with 2 038 927 the year before. Security State Bank held 1 063 732 in deposits, 109 616 above last year, its highest on call. First National Bank reported 790 503 in deposits, down from 834 091 a year earlier.
Robert D. Penn and R S Burchard took oaths as county attorney and precinct 2 commissioner at a commissioners court meeting Tuesday. They were the only changes in the county's official family for 1939, replacing R L Toll and J J Pope of Toyah while others were re elected.
The H. F. Anthony et al No. 1 Richard Shaw shallow well in Reeves County showed a small flow this week as preparations began for 250 barrels of extra storage. The well produces about 15 to 16 barrels daily and a 210 barrel storage tank at the site has been filled. The well lies in section 16, block 59, about 16 miles north of Toyah, at a depth of 1630 feet.
Fire Wednesday night destroyed the school house at Orla in Reeves county common school district No. 7. Property loss was estimated at 250 dollars. Officials theorize a transient slept in the building and left a burning cigarette or match. Six students in the district will likely finish the year in a residence.
