First American in Orbit Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The event recalls the 1962 Atlas mission lasting 4 hours 55 minutes with manual recovery after automatic controls failed. Glenn later pursued politics, winning a Senate bid years after retirement from space work.

March 1 is the voter registration deadline for city and school board elections on April 1. Under a new law voters may register anytime, but cannot vote until 30 days after registering. Three city seats and mayoral race notes, with several incumbents and filings listed. County and Reeves County School Board openings also described with March 1 filing deadlines. Prospective voters may register at the courthouse or request forms by mail. Fire at Nik-Nak Grocery caused heavy damage to exterior trash bin area but interior safe.
