Workmen will begin improvements at Rotary field as part of a 30 day FERA project with 15 men assigned. The $1000 state relief funding covers sodding and a race track around the field, plus a cinder tract and updated safety features. The Pecos school board and high school officials earned approval after extensive effort to provide West Texas with a modern athletic facility.
Taylor Conger 61 a Balmorhea resident died suddenly this week in El Paso While on a cattle buying trip into Old Mexico with John Oates of Balmorhea he was stricken Conger had come to the trans Pecos from Sterling county and was long active in the cattle business He owned a Balmorhea restaurant at the time of his death
Lincoln's Birthday was observed in Pecos with bank closings and school programs. Both banks remained closed all day as the community marked the holiday.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly membership meeting at the Red Bluff damsite on Tuesday March 12. Red Bluff officials contractors foremen and superintendents will attend as honored guests. All Pecos residents interested in the dam construction are urged to attend. A banquet will be held at the Texapean Commissary with a special dinner for the occasion. The Pecos delegation will inspect the work in progress during the gathering.
Freeman W. Burford is presented in Austin Saturday with the rank of lieutenant colonel on the staff of Governor James W. Allred. The ceremony marks his designation on the governor's staff as part of the staff changes announced in Austin.
Over 100 Boy Scouts from Pecos and nearby towns attended a full day rally under the Pecos troops with Lions and Rotary clubs. A C Williamson of the Buffalo Trail Council oversaw activities while troops arrived by noon and joined contests and honor ceremonies at Rotary Field.

Judge W A Hudson of Pecos has been named by Federal Judge Charles A Boyton as Referee in Bankruptcy for the Pecos division of the western district of Texas. He succeeds the late Judge Ben Randall and brings decades of Reeves County and West Texas experience to the post. Hudson and his son Hill Hudson form the law firm Hudson and Hudson in Pecos.
Pecos new theatre in the Patterson building is being equipped with chairs and fixtures this week and is expected to open within ten days. Manager designate Jimmy Dezendorf, formerly of Marfa, could not be reached for a statement. The building is completed and the stage prepared for use.
State Senator K M Regan reports to the Chamber of Commerce that Federal NRS funds may surface 2.5 miles of road from State Highway 27 to the Red Bluff damsite. The Highway Commission worries about immediate take over but backs Pecos plea as a feeder road to a federal aid highway. Federal support could save Reeves County and pave the route to the dam site.
Postmaster M. W. Collie custodian for the federal building site received a Washington notice to vacate the premises in 10 days to avoid delaying the contractor R. Ek. McKee of El Paso. The property was already vacant, making the notice unnecessary.
The Pecos Lions Club hosted a Wednesday noon auction at the Brandon Coffee Shop to fund travel for delegates to the National Lions Convention in Mexico City this July. Bids on small items like a penny valentine and a pencil far exceeded their cost as members competed. Miss Nell Chism entertained with readings and Lion R. H. Blackwell reported Rotary field improvements and Boy Scout Rally news.
The Pecos water distribution system is set to transfer from the Community Public Service Co to the City of Pecos this weekend or early next week. Judge J E Starley, attorney for the city, signed off on the title at Fort Worth this week. Contractor C E Lytle, lead on the project, reserved housing and boarding for 32 skilled laborers at Triangle Camp, with some arrivals expected within a week or two.
Judge W. R. Ely of the State Highway Commission told the Rotary Club Pecos has more tourist attractions than any area outside California. He said transport revolution favors highways over rail and praised Pecos for highway opportunities, climate, and growth potential. He spoke during a Barstow court visit and did not discuss other highway matters.
A storm delivering .39 inches of rain and snow fell in Pecos from Saturday through Tuesday, the first notable precipitation since last September. Snow flurries Tuesday morning briefly coated the ground, but warmth melted most of it, leaving mud and slush as the general condition. Rain was heavier to the east and south than in Pecos.
Drilling is expected to resume this weekend or early next week on the Cunningham Eppenauer No. 1 Tillar wildcat near Toyah. The gas-producing well has spurred a leasing boom in Toyah as it shut down at 2 3673 feet.
John M. Owens who runs a Pecos produce business had a close call near Sierra Blanca last Thursday night when his truck overturned after he says he briefly slept and lost control. The vehicle sustained little damage. the cargo was saved and Owens suffered no serious injuries.
Toyah High defeated Pyote 41 to 18 at the Pecos gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon. The game was moved to Pecos to use the indoor court facilities.
Beau McCutcheon Jr. won a $75 prize at the Grand Theater on Tuesday night. A capacity crowd filled the venue for the event and celebration.
Arnold J. Stovall a 40 year old Grandfalls fireman died of burns after an explosion at a Monahans area oil rig last Tuesday. A second worker suffered severe burns and remained in a Monahans hospital with fair chances of recovery. Stovall died in the Monahans hospital the following day and funeral services were held at Kolar Funeral chapel with burial at Fairview cemetery. He is survived by a wife and two children.
George Ross of the Silk Dry Goods Co. is in Dallas this week taking a special course in card writing and window merchandising as part of the Dallas Market Season. He will remain another week to study this essential feature of modern merchandising.
District Deputy Grand Master L G Haines of Wink I O O F Lodge No 163 and Pecos Oddfellows organized Pecos City Lodge No 650 in the K P hall Monday night at 7 30 o clock. Officers named include J L Donnell N G John R Porter W G H D Hardy secretary Guy Porter treasurer with refreshments served after the formation.
Merchants of Pecos and the Pecos Chamber of Commerce invite residents to the first Trades Day of 1985 on Saturday February 25. A $100 cash prize will be awarded in four tickets drawn at 4 30 p m with winners required to be present. Numerous local stores sponsor the event and cash prizes range 50 25 15 and 10 dollars.
A New Jersey jury condemned Richard Bruno Hauptmann to death for the kidnapping and slaying of Baby Lindbergh. The lengthy deliberation lasted about twelve hours late Wednesday night.
The Macon, Navy dirigible once over Pecos a year ago, crashed into the sea off the California coast Tuesday night. All but two of the crew were recovered nearby ships. Cause remains a mystery. The Shenandoah and Akron also crossed Pecos and perished. the Los Angeles survived.
