David P. Marion is named County Supervisor for the Farmer's Home Administration based in Pecos. Transferred from Lubbock on January 24, he plans to move his family as soon as a rental house is vacated. Marion, a Spur High School and Texas A&M graduate, will serve Reeves Loveing Winkler and Ward counties with FHA loans for rural housing and community services.
In Pecos the community collects hardback books for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Arthur L. Schmid donates a 14 volume tech library and an English furniture book. Donations can be left at Community Public Service Co or given to local residents with arrangements for large collections. The effort invites all citizens to contribute and have their names recorded in the Founder's Library.
Rig activity in the 65 county area spanning West Texas and Southeast New Mexico falls by 11 to 183 rigs this week from 194 last week per G W Murphy Industries. Lea New Mexico and Pecos Texas lead district counts with 31 and 24 rotaries respectively. District 8 Midland shows 88 rigs. Southeast New Mexico has 41. Districts 8 A Lubbock and 7 C San Angelo report 24 and 23 rotaries. County table lists Andrews 4, Chaves 1, Ector 57 and others as readable entries.
Time magazine accuses author Clif ford Irving of fabricating much of his Howard Hughes autobiography and says he admitted the hoax to spare his wife from jail. The magazine compares Irving's book with an earlier manuscript by James Phelan and finds numerous duplicated passages.
