Engineers rebound but poised for shortages in coming years
A resurgence in engineering hiring signals recovery from late 1960s slump, with the College Placement Council reporting a 27 percent rise in recruiting for 1973 graduates and Northwestern’s Frank Endicott predicting 42 percent more job openings. Yet dwindling enrollments may push demand higher than supply as 43,000 engineers graduated last year could fall to 32,000 in four years, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 48,000 annual openings.
