The U.S. Command reported one American killed in action last week in Vietnam, the lowest weekly toll in nearly seven years, with seven total combat deaths and 29 wounded. Nonhostile deaths rose to five. South Vietnamese forces suffered 287 killed and 633 wounded. enemy killed totaled 1,035.
Texas Highway Department figures show litter pickup costs for the year ending Aug 30 1971 climbed to more than 3.4 million dollars, about 1.4 million higher than the previous year due to equipment and labor costs and changes in disposal fees. Local notices include Postmaster window hours, water superintendent action, and guidance on reporting cash tips to the IRS.
A Pecos Enterprise survey shows Reeves County elected officials would earn more than peers in Dawson Fayette Nolan and Pecos counties of similar size if the proposed budget passes at a January 10 commissioners court hearing. Pay raises would appear in the January 15 payroll and retroactive to January 1.
About 40 of 200 Potter County employees sign a petition asking commissioners to withdraw a $10 monthly pay hike approved for 1972. Sheriff Paul Gaither plans to present the petition, noting the rise could push some staff into higher tax brackets.
A large black goat invaded Northern Propane Gas Co. in Pecos injuring no one but frightening staff. Deputy Kenneth Stroud shot the animal as it charged his car after it chased Sheriff’s deputies and Police Chief Gene Martin. The goat belonged to Highway Patrol Sgt. Melton Rasberry, who said the pet was mean and had caused trouble before. A tighter gate watch will follow to curb unwelcome visitors.
Four persons held in Reeves County Jail on $1000 bonds each after a justice of the peace charged them with theft over 5 dollars. David William Browning and Laura Ellen Rankin of San Diego California Peggy Mayer of Highland Park Illinois and Gary Heatherington of Indianapolis Indiana allegedly left the Interstate Gulf service station on IH 20 without paying a 7 60 gasoline bill. They were apprehended by Van Horn sheriff s officers.
The U S announced more than 1000 combat strikes over five days with about 350 aircraft. Three American planes were lost and crews missing or rescued while North Vietnam claimed several planes shot down and pilots killed or captured. The raid targeted MIG bases, SAM sites, antiaircraft batteries, radars, and depots up to 80 miles south of Hanoi. It marked the deepest penetration since the November 1968 bombing halt.
Americans ring in 1971-72 with lavish purchases as champagne and caviar sales surge.
