During a 78 hour Christmas period 61 people died in Texas road and rail incidents. Forty one were in motor vehicle accidents and 17 were shot to death, with multiple named victims including J M Shelton of Fort Worth and Rohila Hillier of Houston.

A five year old Odessa girl Martha Lisa Martinez suffered a forehead abrasion and was listed in good condition at Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car driven by 19 year old Bobby Gene Stafford. The incident occurred near 1000 block of South Cedar Street around 1 50 p m as the child darted from a group of kids on the east side of the road.
Warm weather blankets most of Texas with predawn temperatures in the 50s and 60s and near 70 in the extreme south. The National Weather Service forecasts little change today with partly cloudy skies and mild to warm conditions. A Pacific front from New Mexico moves into Texas Tuesday followed by a cold front on the Plains, bringing cooler air to North Texas later today.

Washington AP notes selective service officials predict no one will be drafted in January 1972. The Pentagon has not issued a new draft call for the first quarter, and inductees require 30 days notice, making January almost certain to be draft free.
The State Department report shows the Soviet Union sharply increased arms aid pledges to non Communist developing countries in 1970 led by Egypt, with total new economic pledges to non Communist lands at 204 million dollars. Red China pledged 709 million in economic aid, led by Tanzania and Zambia with a 400 million railroad project and 100 million in additional pledges.
