A B Nail announces plans to seek a fourth term as Reeves County sheriff, contingent on the Democratic primary in May. The veteran peace officer, who became sheriff in 1956, says training and experience are essential to effective law enforcement.
Families of 18 American servicemen held by Viet Cong learned their relatives are alive, easing decades of anxiety. The releases came via the Committee of Liaison With Families of Servicemen Detained in North Vietnam, with letters from prisoners collected in Paris.
Winners announced by Reeves County Young Homemakers include T C Hoopers at 2205 Country Club Dr first in novelty with a red tree formed by wiring a TV antenna and Santa figure, Cliff Preslar at 200 Wells Rd with Santa and reindeer atop the house, and second place to Dudley Montgomery at 1730 Washington. Recognition also goes to Kenneth Dossey and wife for an artistic nativity plaque, and Norman Eisenwine at 122 Plum for a Bethlehem scene.
Two Wickett residents injured in a one car crash 19 miles west of Toyah on Interstate 20. Maria Adams 17 in serious condition with left arm amputated and multiple injuries. James T. Adams 32 in fair condition with fractures and contusions. Elva Apodeca 6 treated and released. Ambulance delay reported. Pecos Fire Department volunteers responded quickly.
The Pecos Evening Optimist Club will host a Christmas Day party at 10 a.m. in Saragosa Hall on 6th and Peach Streets. Volunteers will hand out sacks of candy and fruit, aiming to surpass last year’s 2500 sacks. Two dances raise funds for youth programs with San Antonio bands Gilbert Rodriguez and Sunny and The Sunliners performing.
Mitchell Hoover retired after a lifelong rail career spanning six decades. He began as a mechanic with Texas & Pacific in Big Spring in 1926, moved to diesel maintenance in 1949, and joined Pecos Valley Southern Railroad, where he worked as an engineer since 1949, ending his service at Engine No. 8.
Widespread fog and light drizzle plagued central and eastern Texas with a dividing line from Abilene to Del Rio separating clear western weather from foggy eastern zones. Temperatures ranged from 31 in Marfa to 53 in Galveston and Houston, with highs up to 76 in Brownsville and 74 in Alice. Dallas saw a cool 48 as fair to party cloudy skies were forecast statewide later.
Eight nights before Christmas at Santa Rosa Church Pecos, Mexico Catholic Posada reenacts Mary and Joseph seeking shelter. A Mass and novena begin each evening, followed by processions to homes, then pinatas and refreshments. Christmas Eve ends with shelter at church and nativity gifts.
