The Columbia University football team traveling by special train with trainers and staff passed Pecos early Friday morning about 6 30 oclock. They head to the Pacific coast to play Stanford in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Mr and Mrs W S Creamy McCree welcome a daughter born last Monday December 18 at Pecos Sanitarium. The infant Nancy Sue weighs six pounds and is reported healthy. Creamy McCree manages the White House Grocery and Elizabeth Rhodes McCree is a Pecos High School graduate.
The Pecos Carnegie library and Pecos airport will receive substantial improvements funded by the Civil Works Administration with about half the material costs covered. A State CWA board review, led by H. P Davis, aims to advance both projects with a visiting engineer to inspect the airport and advise on improvements.
Freels No 1 Greenman wildcat in Reeves County near Pecos shows apparent commercial oil and gas. The well hits Delaware black lime at 3875 feet and pay at 5950 feet, with gas blasting tools upward seven times in the last 15 feet. Oil samples indicate gravity about .40, raising hopes for a major Pecos oil pool and potential widespread production.
A large Pecos audience from all churches welcomed Rev. A. G. Abbott, new Christian Church minister, at a union service. Clergy from Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist and Episcopal churches spoke, and Abbott shared a sermon on The Four Anchors. He comes from Sabinal Texas where he led Red Cross and Rotary work and received city thanks. He is accompanied by Mrs Abbott and two children.
The Pecos Rotary club presented a two hour home talent revue at the Grand Theater to a packed crowd, hailed as the most successful ever. The show blended clean jokes, music and dance numbers with a minstrel format, featuring Senator Ken Regan as interlocutor and a strong ensemble including Hilliard Camp Bill Kerr Harvey Beau champ and Martin Michel. Encore after encore highlighted solid performances from the cast and a surprise dance by Tommy Hughes.
The junior class play Girl Shy drew a large enthusiastic audience at the high school auditorium. Cast members including W L Card Birdie Bell and Janice Wadley delivered polished performances with strong supporting roles from Willie Faye Starley Frank Mitchell Ira Mae O Neil and others. The production featured a mix of humor romance and drama climaxing with Jasper Miller as a college dean.
Three new works under the Civil Works Administration for Reeves County are now under way. The projects aim to accelerate relief efforts and provide employment, with details on locations and beneficiaries to follow.
Pecos ex players defeated Pecos high school Eagles 14 to 6 in a tight game. Coaches Buddy Withers and Tommy Thompson played for the town team. Withers connected on a 49 yard pass to Thompson for a fourth down score, then Thompson caught the extra point. The Eagles drove to the 12 yard line but failed on downs as the town team cleared the danger.
The pistol match between Sheriff Louis Roberson and W. J. McCune of Pecos and Deputy Sheriff Ellis Summers and Mayor F. L Ted ford of Wink was postponed by high winds. It is rescheduled for Sunday at 1 30 p.m. at the old rifle pit on the Fort Stockton road with a turkey shoot at the same time.
A Christmas urge asks readers to report any child facing an empty stocking to Rotary or Lions clubs. Call Earl Bell Hilliard Camp Charley Manahan or Jack Lawkins to arrange aid.
Rotary and Lions clubs in Pecos join to provide Christmas gifts and food to needy families. Dr J Hilliard Camp and J W Brooks chair the drives, with baskets of food toys and clothing to be delivered Saturday to Mexican and Black families. Proceeds from the Rotary Revue will fund the effort.
The CWA in Austin tentatively approves Pecos city hall plans via H P Davis. A labor grant of several thousand dollars will fund construction, allowing the city to reserve funds for materials. A Baugh recommends minor changes, with draftsmen to forward sketches to Judge Randall. The city purchases three Drummond lots for 2650, Breen's shop razed, site to be cleared, enabling winter unemployment relief building.
Reeves County Irrigation District No. 1 at Balmorhea receives word from Emil Schram that its refunding of outstanding obligations has been approved. The refinancing, once details are completed, will cut water rates by about 1 dollar per acre. Judge J E Starley prepared the refinancing application.
Pecos plans a new school offering amateur radio courses covering fundamentals of short wave work and operation and maintenance of transmitter and receiver. The program prepares students to obtain an amateur license from the Radio Commission.
Following an annual custom the Grand Theater will host Santa Claus for all children at the Saturday afternoon matinee. The show starts at 2 o'clock and promises activities for every youngster.
First loans approved in Pecos under the Home Loan Act passed by Congress were announced by Judge Henry Russell and Home Loan Corporation attorneys. The initial lots went to C. Foster and J. H. Colesby, with over 40 applications pending and more approvals expected soon. Loan approvals lift mortgage burdens and boost tax funds and local trades. H. N. McKellar named local appraiser succeeding Earl Bell.
Pecos welcomes a new Piggly Wiggly location in the Collins building beside City Pharmacy. A C Caswell serves as manager with J M Speed as owner alongside local staff Thelbert Buck Oram Green and C E Gann also join the venture noting the franchise form aids independent merchants.

Santa’s pre Christmas visit drew thousands under Chamber of Commerce auspices and local groups unite to ensure no empty stockings. Churches Rotary Lion Legion Boy Scouts plan programs and homes glow with holiday decorations.
Ralph Williams of Williams Kerr Chevrolet Co says the 1984 Chevrolet shows the greatest improvement with knee action on the four wheels. He recently toured the Detroit factory and test driven a new model on GM proving grounds, noting the car floats over rough roads.
Louis Wood announces his appointment as manager of the Courtesy One-Stop Service Station in Vecos. He succeeds Ira Shroyer and pledges first class service and materials with Sinclair products and an expert mechanic in charge. He invites friends to visit the highway location.
