Seventeen years after the 1954 ruling, U S desegregation law remains unsettled as busing becomes a national issue. Nixon rejects HEW plan while courts and HEW push plans to desegregate, focusing on Northern and Southern districts and freedom of choice legacy.
The Senate Commerce Committee delays Rush Moody Jr. of Midland from advancing to the Senate floor after Sen. Thomas J. McIntyre requests a new hearing. McIntyre questions Moody’s disclosure of 500 Lone Star Gas shares and asset sales, and notes Moody’s firm represents Mobil and Texaco. He also urges disqualification in potential FPC cases where the firm may be involved. Magnuson announced no objections to moving Moody forward pending answers.
Peggy Knust will leave August 21 from San Francisco to Tokyo and Nagoya for a year under the Rotary exchange program. She will live with the Okamoto family and attend Kinjo University, aiming to learn more abroad than in Pecos High School. Masako Okamoto, a home economics major, tours the United States and plans to return in September.
Ann Slack 16 daughter of Rep Richard C Slack was named Miss Cotton for 1971 72 at the Pecos Valley Country Club. She will be a Pecos High School senior active in Latin Science and band and plans to represent Pecos at the Maid of Cotton Contest in Dallas. Runner up Rebecca Weatherby of Coyanosa is a 4 H and FFA leader. Special entertainment featured Wanda Passmore and Becky Rogers on piano and Alton Hughes on organ.
Texas congressman Henry B Gonzalez accuses Asst. Atty. Gen. Will Wilson of involvement in the Sharpstown stock scandal. Gonzalez vows to push impeachment if Congress acts, citing Wilsons alleged role in helping Frank Sharp obtain immunity while Sharp pleaded guilty to false entries and unregistered stock sales.
Four buses carrying 127 students from Tokyo and eight from South America halted in Pecos after a roughly 3000 mile journey. The group began in Minneapolis July 24 and travels to New Orleans then along the East Coast to Niagara Falls, guided by Rotary International of Japan sponsors and Minneapolis counselors.
In Dallas Oak Cliff residents showing interest in selling or seeking new homes rose sharply after a court ordered desegregation of schools. Real estate dealers report 200 dealers polled estimated 2,000 to 4,000 residents contacted about housing, up about 90 percent, amid fears of declining property values from busing plans.
The House Interior and Insular Affairs Subcommittee approved a bill for a feasibility study of the Red Bluff Irrigation Project spanning Reeves Ward Pecos and Loving counties. Proposed by Congressman Richard White, the study is a step toward rehabilitating irrigation for about 22 000 acres along the Pecos River border area in West Texas.
