The Southwest Conference of Mayors and Chamber of Commerce Representatives met in Marfa last weekend to discuss tourism development. Pecos delegates Mayor B A Toliver Alderman Dudley Yard and Chamber secretary Ben Smith attended. Pecos contributed 226 dollars toward a Southwest booklet but the donation was returned. A new advertising plan will be developed at the El Paso meeting.

Eleven Pecos Band Students Suffer Food Poisoning
Eleven Pecos residents attending the regional band contests in Odessa were stricken with ptomaine poisoning Saturday night. Authorities traced the illness to food served at an Odessa cafe. Thirty six AAA payment checks totaling 5570.73 arrived for Reeves county farmers and ranchers. County Agent Ted Johnston and Secretary Winifred Dyer distributed funds in Balmorhea and mailed notices to Pecos farmers. Nolan Indicted on Robbery Charge in Reeves County
Reeves county grand jury returned an indictment for Carl Nolan charging robbery and assault. Two co defendants in the Pecos Mercantile case received prison terms totaling more than 150 years each, resulting in no indictment against them.

New Grower Cotton Lands Planted in Reeves County
About 700 acres in Reeves County will be planted in cotton by new grower farmers this year. County Agent Ted Johnston reports final allotments show a total slightly over 700 acres with most land in the Red Bluff District along the Pecos River and additional plots near Pecos Balmorhea and pump farms. Nine persons cultivate land under these allotments.

Cemetery Program Is Started Again In Pecos
WPA laborers in Pecos resumed work this weekend on an improvement program at Fairview Cemetery after a five day rest. Two Pecos study clubs joined the effort donating funds and time. The Modern Study Club contributed 5 dollars and the Garden Club will sponsor landscaping of the cemetery entrance. Residents may donate evergreens shrubs or archivitis by contacting Garden Club Cemetery Association or city officials.

Victim Dies In Pecos Highway Crash Near Abilene
Edwin Neely age 32 of Abilene dies after a collision three miles east of Pecos. W. L. Waldrop suffers serious injuries and is hospitalized in Pecos. Both men worked for Westex Neon. Neely was married with two children. The crash occurred as the car veered into an abutment while Waldrop was sleepy. Neely died minutes after first responders arrived. The incident marked the thirteenth fatality in the western district since September.

Dairyman Ovey Farnum Dies in Barstow at 58
George Farnum a Barstow resident and West Texas dairy farmer died at home after a brief illness. Born August 25, 1880 in Chapel Hill he moved to Barstow in 1908 and operated a dairy for 12 years. He leaves wife Effie Miles Farnum and three children, Watters Clevern and Margaret, plus mother Mrs E A Farnum and sisters in Pecos. Funeral was Monday at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Barstow cemetery.

Plan for West Texas 4-H Club Encampment
Plans were made for the second annual West Texas 4-H Club Boys encampment at Balmorhea on June 4, 5 and 6. County Agent Ted Johnston of Pecos and W. H. Hillin visited Balmorhea to arrange Split Garbers near Phantom Lake as the campsite. About 100 to 150 boys from surrounding counties will attend, with Johnston predicting about twice last year’s attendance and broader county representation.

Pecos Band Students Lead State Contest To Abilene Trip
Pecos junior and senior high bands earned 159 points for first and second division ratings at the Texas state band contest in Odessa. Senior bands qualified for the national Abilene contest April 27 with first division honors in marching and concert playing. Plans call for 71 students to travel by bus and cars to Abilene, with 44 boys and 27 girls staying at the Woolen Hotel at an estimated trip cost of 372 dollars.

The case is tied up in litigation and drilling cannot progress until resolution. earlier owners Frankley and Rice directed deepening by 100 feet and plans considered testing the same area with another well.
