The Frome killings of Mrs. Weston G. Frome and her daughter Nancy shock Texas and the nation. Investigators face few clues as they await a breakthrough, with renewed rewards and possible links to Odessa murder cases.
Reeves County Commissioners Court praises Commissioner Halsey Glover of Precinct 1 and Commissioner Stock Ingle of Precinct 4 for launching Pecos street improvement work. The precincts held surplus license funds and chose to spend inside Pecos, reflecting good county city relations and addressing badly needed repairs.
Pecos City Council opened bids this week on a new street sweeper but deferred final action pending further investigation. Aldermen said that purchase justified additional study before a decision.
In Pecos Independent School District voters backed a slate of trustees with Charles Fitzegerald and Roy Wilcox leading the ticket, totals reaching 117 each. Write-in candidates gathered scattered supports but failed to alter the top results. Voters in Pecos elected Ben F. Colwell and R. G. Middleton to fill two vacant council seats. Colwell sought reelection as alderman, Middleton a former council member. With terms of J. B. Heard and Colwell expiring, only 50 votes were cast with Middleton 50, Colwell 49, and L A Smith one write in.
W. E. Wozencraft bought Tex Arnold's stake and took over management last week. He previously managed the Interstate Restaurant in the Greyhound Bus Depot for the past year. A. C. Riley of Monahans is also showing interest in the cafe. Arnold plans to depart soon for a trip to the east.
Clayton Hopkins and G. W. Archer of Junction accept Pecos coaching posts. Hopkins, named head coach, will earn 1850 dollars yearly. Archer, assistant, 1450 dollars. The board approved a 50 dollar raise and Supt. R. Henry Blackwell wired the decision chairman.
Nominations for Rotary Club officers for the coming year were announced at a luncheon. Charles Manahan is proposed for president with Rev. John Byrd as vice president. Dan Boone would be secretary treasurer, and a slate of directors includes Capt M L Swinehart Robert Bell Harry Hinkle M W Collie Keith Camp and Dick Toll. Members toured the new telephone building after the meeting.
More than a thousand passenger cars were licensed this week by the Reeves county sheriff's office. Owners who buy tags after March 31 must present an affidavit that the automobiles have not been driven since that date or pay a 20 percent penalty.
Katherine Rose DeRacy and Peggy Glover were elected senior and junior band sweethearts for 1939-40. DeRacy won the senior title by audience vote from 12 candidates and Glover was chosen by popular vote for the junior group. Both will accompany the bands to Odessa Saturday for the state spring contests.
West Texas chills sweep Trans Pecos as near freezing temperatures endanger about 300 acres of cantaloupes near Pecos. County Agent Ted Johnston warns a freeze now would be disastrous, threatening an early crop and potential market readiness if temperatures rise.
Work started this week on a Pecos street improvement program funded by county precincts 1 and 4. About 2,500 has been spent by Thursday, with 1,500 planned more, finishing next week under Commissioners Court guidance. Holsey Glover and Stock Ingle oversee the project, focusing on Ninth Street and north Pecos areas using surplus license funds within city limits.
At least four Pecos residents will attend the Southwest Conference of Mayors and Chamber of Commerce Representatives meeting in Marfa today and tomorrow. An open-air band concert and remarks by city and county officials marked the opening of Pecos new Cactus Theatre on Wednesday evening. Mayor Toliver Judge Woolfolk and Chamber of Commerce President Yard welcomed the venue, with remarks from local manager Cunningham and Cactus owner Sanders. A National Theatre Supply Co. representative spoke briefly. Cunningham praised the warm reception and opening success.
The Texas Senate passed a bill by Sen. H. L. Winfield 23 to 2 to create a 788000 acre national park in Big Bend. It authorizes the Parks Board to acquire land and accept donations, with $1000 from state funds and the rest hoped to be raised by public subscription chaired by Amon G. Carter. v O Daniel endorses. Two years ago Gov Allred vetoed land purchase funds on economy grounds.
Progress on the Fairview Cemetery improvement under a WPA grant includes a native stone fence now one third complete along west and north boundaries. A cedar hedge and wire fence surround the south and east sides. The finance committee nears the $1200 goal. contributions total $982.50 from several local donors.
Pecos county’s new 1,155,000 gallon reservoir went into service this week increasing town storage to more than 1.5 million gallons. Mayor Toliver said irrigation rates may be reduced as consumption rises and beautification efforts follow.
A Mines representative explored sponsoring a Mines Hardin Simmons game in Pecos on October 7. The game is currently set for El Paso. Pending talks with Hardin Simmons officials may yield a definite proposal after a Tuesday follow up. The Chamber sponsored two seasons of college games, profiting on the Sul Ross West Texas State game but losing money on Sul Ross Weatherford.
Mayor B A Tolianounces Pecos sewer project is 80 percent complete with a $106 000 contract. A disposal plant will be built and the system extended to areas previously without sewage service. Completion is expected well before the May 10 deadline.
