Mary Slingerland, 51, chained herself to a tree in Chicago to protest workers who felled about 20 trees on a strip of land between her yard and the Chicago River. She remained bound for six hours as crews failed to arrive.
SAIGON AP U S Command apologized to CBS for a memo suggesting reporter Morley Safer had an ulterior motive in Vietnam. Col Robert W Leonard said corrective action was taken with no disciplinary action against individuals.
First Lt. Brian M. Thacker, 25, of Hickam Air Force Base Hawaii, returns to Fire Base 6 at Pleiku Vietnam after nine days missing since the base was overrun on March 31. He was reported uninjured despite nine days in enemy jungle as artillery and air bombardment continued.
Air Force Col. Ralph Albertazzie, President Nixon's pilot, says flights are run with high organization and efficiency. He notes Air Force One has never been more than 28 seconds off schedule and praises Nixon and his family as well organized travelers compared to the Johnson era.
Julie Dyer ends a 27 year career as a boarding mother at the Children's Home Society. Over 27 years she cared for 298 infants while serving as one of 35 temporary mothers employed by the private adoption agency to help babies whose mothers could not or would not keep them.
The Associated Press reports mild and dry conditions across the continental United States with sections of the Northeast dipping below freezing. Northwest coastal areas see scattered showers while North Bend Oregon records nearly an inch of rain. Lakes Huron Michigan and Superior issue gale warnings as Midwest winds reach 30 mph. Early morning temps span 19 at Lebanon New Hampshire to 70 at Needles California.
The April 1 AP report shows 1.4 million farms enrolled in the 1971 feed grain program, up from 916,305 a year earlier. About 67.56 million acres of corn and sorghum base are covered, with wheat enrollments at 749,561 versus 521,781 last year. Cotton signup stands at 55 percent of national allotment. period ends April 9.
The Pecos Optimist Club plans a two group Easter egg hunt tomorrow at 10 30 in City Park airbase area with 5000 candy eggs. Prize eggs include fifty at $1 and three $10 eggs plus five $5 eggs. Wendell Taylor chairs the event inviting all Pecos children ages five and under and six through ten.
Port Isabel Texas reports a big holiday crowd as estimated 60 000 visitors flood South Padre Island for weekend events including surfing contests dances and sunrise services. Law officers note few arrests for marijuana alcohol or minor beer possession and deputies keep watch as crowds enjoy sun and surf under mixed conditions.
Prisilla Tersero, a Sul Ross State University junior, earned a Dean's List honor for the Fall Semester. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Tersero of 1118 South Asu.
Bill Wilson, golf pro at Municipal Course, announces a handicap tournament for tomorrow with golfers in town invited to participate. Tee off any time during the day. Entry fee is 15 dollars for the 18 hole meet, plus a dozen free balls for each paid entrant. First prize is a set of Royal irons, second a set of Royal woods, and third plus the closest to the pin win Royal golf bags. Regular play remains available for those not entering.
The Reeves County Sheriff's Posse re elected its officers with Capps stepping down for health reasons. Bill Calloway will replace him as secretary treasurer. Returning officers include President A B Nail Captain Dorr Snailum Lt Jiggs Barfield Sgt Tom Erskine Corral Boss Cecil Brown Building Custodian J F Gassett and Entertainment Chairman Bob Burkholder. Jane Erskine daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Erskine chosen as Posse Sweetheart for the second year.
A revival starts Sunday April 11 at the Assembly of God Church on South Eddy Street. Evangelist Gary Schaeffer of Abilene will lead nightly services at 7 30 and present services in song as vocalist guitarist pianist composer recording artist and youth speaker. The public is invited to hear the Schaeffer sound in sacred song.
City councilmen Manuel Trujillo Clem Crowley and Glen Ellis were declared official winners of the April 3 election. They will serve two year terms after tallying 420 269 260 votes for Trujillo Crowley and Ellis.
Christine “Chris” Lamkin Peters died yesterday at 5 45 p m at 2125 Hackberry after a long illness. Services will be Monday at 2 p m at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Fred Ryle officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery under Pecos Funeral Home direction. Peters born August 2 1948 in Compton California, daughter of Howard and Dade Lamkin, was active in Pecos High School and Sul Ross State University. She married Steve Peters on May 17 1969 in Pecos. Surviving: husband, her parents, sister, brother Lt Craig Lamkin in the Philippines, paternal grandmother Glady F Lamkin of Ripon California, maternal grandmother Daisy Orton of Monahans.
Larry Houndshell formerly of Texaco and a Texas DPS Academy graduate has been assigned to the El Paso region with the Highway Patrol. He completed training recently and moved from Austin to a West Texas posting west of the Pecos. Clear to partly cloudy and mild through Saturday with highs 72 to 90 and lows 38 to 55.
In Jerusalem and around the world millions observe Easter and Passover as crowds flood streets and public life slows. Good Friday processions mark the Way of the Cross led by Franciscan Father Erminio Roncari with record pilgrim participation since the 1967 war. A border cease-fire has held since last August.
F. L. Green of Pecos has been selected for promotion to Commander in the U S Naval Reserve. Born and raised in Pecos he taught school there before moving to Dallas where he manages Administrative Services Life Division for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. He commands a Naval Reserve unit of 13 officers and 141 enlisted men and spends weekends in reserve training each month plus two weeks annually. Green formerly led the Dallas Naval Reserve Association and chairs the Reserve Association's 19th National Convention set for October 1971 in Dallas. He is a Texas Wesleyan alumnus and has a wife Evelyn and three children Carla Sue Tracie De and Todd.
