President Nixon announced another Vietnam troop withdrawal, a move seen as a political gamble that could anger voters yet leaves him 11 months before the next election. He reiterated his 1968 pledge to end American involvement in the war during a nationwide address.
Capitol Records will not issue Tex Ritter’s The Battle Hymn of St Calley after Stan Gortikov and Brown Meigs reviewed a Nashville taped version. The decision aims to avoid glorifying or vilifying Calley and avoids commenting further on the case.

Leonard Slazinski, a 21 year old former Air Force Academy cadet, resigned as a conscientious objector and is pursuing a medical career to heal instead of kill. He was honorably discharged March 2, two and a half months before graduation, the academy’s first such resignation.

Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine endorses an April 24 Washington war protest calling it an effective impassioned but peaceful demonstration. The gesture follows Sen. George McGovern after he announced his own presidential bid.
In Fort Worth a sponsored Easter seal escaped, biting guard Damon Gregory then sliding from a belt trap. Police chased the seal through a mall lot as it dodged rain gear. Gregory finally captured the animal and returned it to its pen, but the seal again escaped.
West of the Pecos area forecast calls for fair skies through Friday with mild afternoon temperatures. Tonight will cool to near 35 degrees with nights reaching into the upper 60s to 70s. Friday highs range from 65 to 80 degrees.
Pecos defeats Ector 6 to 5 in nine innings, aided by a Donald Walker ninth inning triple. Ernie Calanchi allowed four hits in five, while Walker blanked Ector over the final four. Curtis Clinton boot by Ector sparked Pecos early, Norman Tinkler and Ricky Chavez added key two run sequence.
Oaths of office were administered to three school board members, Charles A. Weinacht, Chester J. Kesey, and Richard Naylor. The Pecos-Barstow CSD organized its 1971-72 board with President James Toone and others, discussed sidewalk work at Bessie Haynes Elementary, appointed new board members J.D. Gillespie Joel Daniel and Ray Golden, reviewed March tax collection at 93.7 percent, approved bills totaling 102,848.77 with allocations for maintenance transport interest and sinking fund athletic and lunch programs, and set next meetings for May 13 and school visits to Pecos High April 29 and Pecos Elementary May 6.
Sgt. Jose Tersero, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Tersero of 1118 South Ash, called his mother from Vietnam to say he is doing fine. He is now stationed at Marble Mountain with the U.S. Marines and gave his FPO address in San Francisco 96602.
The Pecos Evening Lions organize a drive to collect used hearing aids for children with hearing problems. The Pecos school system has opened a special room for students with hearing defects and 15 children have benefited from corrective procedures. There will be a meeting of the Girls Softball Association Friday April 9 at 7 p.m. in the coffee room of Security State Bank. All league officers coaches and interested persons are invited to attend.
City Court collected 1450 in March for traffic and offense fines. Offenses yielded 835 with drunk in car at 505 and drunk at 220. Traffic penalties included no driver's license 165 and speed over limits 115. Judge Bill Pigman filed the March report.
Balmorhea High School performers Balmorhea students Crenshaw and Adrian McCutcheon earned spots on the District 1-B All-Star cast after competition in Imperial. First place went to Ft. Davis for the play Pink Lemonade Tomorrow, with Day as Sedonia and Adrian as Caroline Ramsey.
Spring holidays begin with schools in Pecos dismissing students for two days. Students will enjoy the Easter break and resume classes on Tuesday, April 13.
The Westex Hotel is temporarily closed for extensive remodeling by new owners Mr and Mrs Douglas Kein formerly Patsy Gann. They plan to convert the property into efficiency apartment rentals and will announce an opening date later.
Bond sales in Reeves County for February total 20,536 under Series E and H led by County Bond Chairman Archie Scott. First two months show 40,435 29 percent of the 1971 goal 140000 while Texas statewide February sales reach 17 302962 and two month total 34 678727 19 percent of 1319 million goal. National E and H sales hit 431 million an 11 year February peak.
