Parcel post rates could jump over fifty percent in bill
The Associated Press reports the Postal Service warns parcel post rates would rise at least 50 percent if the postal bill passes in current form, hitting rural residents hardest as many shift to UPS. A Simon amendment seeks to retain parcel post subsidies, arguing higher rates hurt the little person while arguing rate effects depend on the Rate Commission.

Pecos Volunteers Fight Davis Mountain Fire in Davis Range
Pecos Volunteer Fire Department fields one unit and six firemen at the Davis Mountains blaze that began Friday. Fire marshal Dick Wadley and chief J T Prewit, with four others, were at the scene this morning. A five-man relief crew is due this afternoon. Since Monday Pecos crews have worked in shifts, battling along 10 miles of lines on both sides of the range. About 20 000 acres, mostly grassland and timber, burned within the McIvor Ranch, with no resort homes in immediate danger after moving from the ranch boundaries. A Texas Forestry Service team from Lufkin joined the effort, while Fort Davis students and Sul Ross State University volunteers assisted. The fire started after a Friday night electrical storm near the McDonald Observatory.
