Slate Creek highway project overruns excavation estimate
About half of the Slate Creek 2.8 mile project is done but excavation will be about 25 percent higher than first forecast. The $6.7 million effort by M M Sundt Construction Co. aims to widen the road to four lanes through a canyon with delays for winter closures.

A Payson Fire Department captain received a certified mail suspension as the Town Council abolished the Fire Marshal position held by Charles Jacobs. The action cites Rule 7 Section 2 Number 1 for actions bringing discredit on Town services. Jacobs had been hired Oct 3 and earned above CAAG guidelines. Belk had questioned the hiring at the Oct 13 meeting. Jacobs was removed from payroll Oct 24. a special council meeting on Nov 3 will address personnel matters and an Appeal Board. Belk may appeal.

First October Snow Reported on Mogollon Rim
Temperatures dipped into the mid 20s on several days signaling a cold spell. The Rim area saw its first snow of the year on October 23, reported by Department of Transportation personnel. Light snow dusted Highway 260 right-of-way though no accumulation on the roadway.
