Six Payson High School girls enter the Miss Gila County contest round up. Kathy Taylor is the lone freshman attending Mesa Community College.
Payson High School may host a community pool after a report by Hollinger Associates. The plan envisions an Olympic size pool with diving boards, a concession stand, picnic area, and bath house at an estimated cost of 278000 to 353000 dollars. A joint board council meeting is set for 8 p.m. at the Gila County building with Hollinger attending.
Ernie Ralls struck a pocket of oil and natural gas while drilling for water in Pine. A state geologist ruled the find insufficient for development, and operations continued with a pipe set to prevent oil from reaching water. Pine remains no oil boom town.
The Payson Classroom Teachers Association sponsors a political forum for local and state candidates in the November general election. The event is at 7 p.m. Monday Oct. 28 in the Julia Randall Elementary School gymnasium.
Tony McDaniel won first prize of $10 in The Roundup football contest for coming closest to predicting the score. Three Payson Junior High School pupils shared the earnings this week.
Earl D. Russell, 79, died Saturday at Payson Hospital. Services were held Tuesday at Payson Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Payson Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Estella, two stepchildren, Doris Birdwell, three sisters out of state, and he moved to Payson from Washington in 1925.
Ida Bell Olson, 45, of Phoenix died when her car overturned after leaving the road. Her daughter Corallee Olson was injured along with another passenger. Larry D. Schooley faces driving while intoxicated charges.
The Roundup announces its second writing competition for youth with a $5 prize for the best poetry by a student from Payson Pine or Tonto Basin schools. Entries must arrive at The Roundup by 5 p.m. Monday Oct 28.
