Payson Chamber of Commerce launches its first annual Sawdust Festival at the rodeo grounds this weekend. Loggers competition draws entrants from around the state with events set for Saturday and Sunday.
Karen Ann Mathews, 14, was found unhurt six miles south of her disappearance point in Mayfield Canyon. After camping near Beaver Valley with her family, she wandered three days, slept under a tree, used her dog as a pillow, and survived without food or water until a U S Air Force helicopter crew located her four miles north of Star Valley.
A 21 year old Payson woman Janie Cox Jackson died from multiple injuries after a one vehicle crash on State Route 87 ten miles north of Payson. Her husband William 22 and a friend Lisa Grubbs 17 were injured. The car skidded on rain slick pavement and occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Grubbs suffered a broken shoulder and pelvis while Jackson had cuts and abrasions. Jackson died several hours later in Payson Hospital. Funeral services were held in Payson. She was born in New Kensington Pennsylvania and moved to Payson in 1961. The story also details local festival plans for Sawdust Festival with contests and prizes.
