The seventh annual Payson Junior Rodeo drew 385 contestants and about 2000 spectators, the largest attendance for any Arizona Junior Rodeo Association event this year, according to A.J.R.A. officials. The Mogollon Montoneras sponsored the rodeo as it served as a key round.
About 385 youths from across Arizona joined Payson’s event with estimated 2,000 to 2,500 spectators. Awards included a saddle for the All-Around Cowboy Troy Hubbard and belt buckles for event winners. Thrilling court details included two youth sharing first in bull riding, Rex LaRue and Debrah Brown earning consolation prizes.
United Utilities Water Company of Payson seeks a 33 1/3 percent interim emergency rate boost filed May 1. A hearing officer recommended the rise after a May 16 closed meeting, with one commissioner reportedly signing the order though two signatures are needed. A public hearing must occur within 90 days of approval for any permanent change. Local officials doubt refunds would be possible if rates rise and bankruptcy affects recovery. Residents also petitioned the ACC to deny the emergency hike.
A 4900 foot by 60 foot paved Payson airport opens with a 1:30 p.m. dedication Friday. Officials from the Town and County Airport Committee, Arizona DOT, FHA, U.S. Forest Service, Payson Chamber, and local groups attend. The project cost about 380000 dollars with federal funds of 345724 dollars and state and county shares around 176000 each.
