Hashknife Pony Express ride to deliver mail in Payson
Hashknife Posse from Navajo County will pick up letters at the Payson Post Office on February 1 as part of its 19th annual Pony Express. Trail boss Mel Bradshaw leads the group with arrival around 4 p.m. They camp one night in Payson before heading to the Verde River and finishing in Scottsdale. Local officials and dignitaries greet the riders.

Fire district vote set for February in Tonto Basin
Voters in Tonto Basin will decide on February 1 whether to form a volunteer fire district. Residents must register by Sunday to be eligible. The county board of supervisors ordered the election on November 8 after petitions met signature requirements. If approved the district would serve about 380 residents between Roosevelt Lake and the Three-E Ranch with up to 1.20 dollars per 100 valuation in taxes. The district would be run by a three member board.

Two Indicted in Landmark Land Sales Fraud Case
A Payson man Hayes G. Stewart and Carl Collins were indicted on 55 counts of mail fraud securities fraud and interstate transportation of money obtained by fraud in a Western Land Sales subdivision scheme near Roosevelt Lake and Show Low. Stewart surrendered in Phoenix. Collins was being sought. Trial set for April 16. Stewart led Rim Country Publishing and was a real estate broker.
