The piece recalls campaign promises of fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets, noting a 28.9 percent automatic pay raise for the current fiscal year. It questions whether national leaders have forgotten their pledges and asks what happened to credibility in politics.
The Payson chamber reports a surge in mail inquiries from across the United States as cold eastern weather and scarce natural gas boost Southwest interest. Tourism offices report a near 200 percent rise in inquiries year over year, with 37,800 in the last quarter of 1976 and 5,000 in the first three weeks of 1977. Local TV series Grizzly Adams features Payson scenery, and state agencies vaccinate 200,000 young trout at Canyon Creek Hatchery north of Young to combat Hagerman Redmouth disease. The piece ends with a humorous line about bread prices.
The author argues that overstaffed government with 350,000 Washington workers, 60 000 at the Pentagon, wastes money on salaries and retirement obligations while many hold no real work. He urges Carter to use career experts and cut sprawling panels and lawyer-driven regulation, stressing disciplined, wisdom grounded decisions.
Residents urge a leash law to curb free ranging dogs and cats harming wildlife and disturbing peace. Letters cite deer disruption and property nuisances, and call for action from local officials and the Payson Roundup.
