Payson High School dominates Central Division at a meet held Saturday earning 134 points to Apache Junction's 132. Hayden, Phoenix Christian, and others trailed as Payson clinched the division crown and received trophies and medals for top finishes.

Payson Schools Superintendent Dr Joseph Matthews resigns

Dr Joseph Matthews announced his resignation as Payson Schools superintendent, effective June 30, after five years in the role. He will focus on personal business as owner of a Gamble's department store outlet with Mike Stevens slated as manager and plans to advance the vocational education program before departure.

Payson honors Glascock and Castersen as 1975 Citizens of the Year

Ed Glascock and Grace Castersen were named Man and Woman of the Year 1975 at the Payson Chamber of Commerce installation dinner. Castersen, a Payson resident since 1926 and 82, volunteers with the Senior Citizens Club and United Presbyterian Church and helped found both groups. Glascock, a 20-year Payson resident and hardware store owner, has supported the hospital and chamber, served on the Pop Warner board, rotary, and chairs the Sanitary Board. Both received engraved plaques.

Town Council Primary Ballot Grows With 19 Names

On Monday the town council primary ballot is expected to list 19 candidates. Duane Christensen and Jake Levesque have petitions in hand along with Bud Haack Bill Foster Ellen Sutton Warren Thomas Don Taylor Neal Reynolds Jack Menschein Willard Stutler and Willard Taylor. Incumbent Dr David Gilbert filed earlier. A public forum at Roberto's Restaurant will feature Dave Marko and Archie Clark speaking about local government and audience questions.

Supreme Court declines ruling on acquittal in Payson case

The State Supreme Court refused to accept jurisdiction on County Attorney Edd Dawson's request to overturn the second acquittal of Thomas A. Allen for the February 1, 1975 knife slaying of Bill Price in Payson. Dawson plans an appeal to the State Court of Appeals. Allen had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon before being acquitted on June 3 by Judge D L Greer.
