Payson expects over 40,000 people for the annual rodeo and football scrimmage. Five to seven thousand cars pass through on a normal weekend, and all area motels are booked. Swiss Village Lodge filled a month ago, while KOA Kampground still accepts reservations.
The Payson Roundup reports a three day rodeo with shows Friday night Saturday and Sunday plus a Saturday parade led by Marshal Ted Brown. Roy Honeycutt of Clovis NM will announce, with Teddy Brown and Janie Banbury among participants. A university scrimmage follows, attendance expected in the thousands, admission $1 adults 50 cents children. Sheriff Lyman Peace asks for funds for extra deputies but the county declines. town requests county assistance, deputies to be provided if needed.
A Payson Citizens Committee subcommittee led by Slim Anderson announces circulation of disincorporation petitions. George Brady cannot head the subcommittee. Don Taylor to lead a second group to plan council candidate options if disincorporation fails and to prepare for a recall. Lynn Sheppard notes county review and opposes disincorporation while praising the town council and low taxes. The next meeting is set for September 4.
The Town of Payson reports a fiscal year tax valuation of 7,363,218 dollars as the first year with a town levy. State rate rose to 1.60 per 100, county to 3.44, school district to 4.21, sanitary district to 1.88, and fire district merged into town taxes with a drop to .81. Net taxpayer relief ranges from .57 to .63 cents depending on district membership.
FAA officials investigate possible air safety violations after a light aircraft crashed near Kohl's Ranch on a Saturday. Pilot Vern Niner, 17, of Scottsdale, and three passengers endured injuries. the craft split in two and damage reached about 15000 dollars. Johnson, Ford, Hill and others suffered various injuries.
