The Arizona Public Service Company will shut off electricity in Payson for about three hours Tuesday morning to service a 69 000 volt main line. Crews begin at dawn and expect to restore power about three hours later after inspecting a broken static conductor found over Natural Bridge Canyon.
Five elected to council Pettet Inscho Fletcher Lollar and Gilbert lead Julia Randall Elementary School at the State Elementary Chess Tournament in Phoenix. The team, with three alternates and sponsors Hebert Ritter Mullien Watson, played ten hours under new rules, finishing second to Payson by one point among 37 schools. Gary Auger went undefeated with five points.
The Arizona five spined IpsLeContei attacks Ponderosa Pines in the Tonto Rim Payson area. Forest Service leader Robert Tippeconnic says the outbreak is epidemic and may worsen, blaming drought and slash piles left by logging. More details on page 20.
The Seven Mesa Wards and Payson Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints present a tread show at 7 30 p.m. Friday in the high school gymnasium. Admission is free and all are welcome. Payson’s segment features Simple Simon’s trip to the fair.
Five candidates won seats in the Payson Town Council primary on Tuesday with Ted Pettet John H Fletcher Dr David B Gilbert Ele Inscho and Eddie Lollar topping the tally. Voter turnout was 32.6 percent with 468 of 1457 eligible electors casting ballots and 13 ballots declared invalid.
Payson hosts its inaugural Country Music Festival at the Rodeo grounds on June 29 and 30. Musicians from across the country are invited. Cash prizes will be awarded in five categories including groups combos ensembles and bands and categories for solo fiddle guitar banjo and mandolin. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event.
Supervisor Lynn Sheppard will be in Payson Monday at 9 a.m. at the Gila County Administration building to talk with residents.
Due to higher paper and material costs, The Payson Roundup increases annual subscriptions effective May 1. In Gila County new rate is 5 dollars, outside Gila County 5.50 dollars. The single copy price rises to 15 cents, first increase since 1967.
