Organize Payette County Club forms county unit

A Payette Chamber of Commerce meeting drew about 60 sportsmen to form a Payette County Club. Members voted to expand the club countywide, with two captains selecting teams for a magpie crow hawk extermination contest over two weeks. Subscriptions set at $1 per year. A drive to recruit more members and enforce game laws was announced, and resolutions urged a state game warden’s and deputy’s reappointment. A follow up meeting will elect officers and finalize the organization.

Chamber Has Good Turn-Out at Friday Meeting

The Chamber of Commerce drew a strong attendance Friday evening. B F McCarroll was elected corresponding secretary to fill the vacancy of Arthur Johnston who recently moved to Idaho Falls. J J Davis praised club work as chairman. J H Stoner spoke on band organization and promised a top Northwest band for Payette with adequate support. The group plans for 1923 and urges members to pay dues promptly, noting regular meetings on the first and third Fridays.

Pretty German Lutheran wedding in Payette area

Miss Florence Helen Siegel married Ernest Gilbert Mattson at the German Lutheran church last Thursday at 6 p m led by Rev Freuntz. The couple, dressed in ivory white satin, will reside on a farm four miles north of Payette. A wedding dinner followed at the Siegel home with family and neighbors present.

Special meeting at K P Castle Hall with Grand Chancellor Auger visit

Last night Wednesday a special meeting was held at K P Castle Hall and Grand Chancellor B Auger of Grangeville visited Payette Lodge. The Ranks of Page and Esquire were conferred, Auger gave an address on the Order's principles. About 75 members attended including 10 from Ontario and three from Weiser. After services a light lunch was served. District Convention will be in Payette March 26 and Knights are urged to attend lodge meetings to support the event.

Shadoin Severely Injured In Garage Fall

F H Shadoin was badly hurt at the Bain Garage when a six foot ladder collapsed while he worked on interior changes for the Van Motor Co. He fell landing on his back, was taken home, a doctor found no broken bones but a badly bruised back. Weight over two hundred pounds worsened the fall and confinement is expected for days.

Registered Hampshire Hog Sale Beats Expectations

The registered Hampshire hog sale at New Plymouth on Wednesday the 7th was a great success with tried sows selling from 50 to 76 pounds and gifts from 35 to 60 pounds. September pigs averaged 14 dollars. J W Clanton conducted the sale in his usual whiz bang manner, showing strong demand for good stock.

Prominent Man Breaks Into Movies Mutual Coal Co

Officers of the Mutual Coal Co of Utah visited Payette to view a screening at Emma theatre Monday evening. The company presented moving pictures illustrating the mine and company affairs. W A Coughanour’s portrait on screen drew cheers from children and adults alike. The event hinted the man could have been a noted movie star had he begun earlier.

Wood Home Narrowly Escapes Fire On South Eighth Street

M. Be Wood’s residence on South Eighth Street escaped serious damage after a chimney fire and burning shingles sparked a blaze on the east and north sides of the house. Mr Wood and neighbors used a ladder and water to extinguish both fires before the fire department arrived, with only minor ceiling and clothing damage. A warning to keep a ladder near the home is urged.

Payette Band Roundup Sparks Community Start

A chaotic but vivid report details a Payette County roundup of a chicken theft gang tied to Twin Palisada and multiple ranches including Nampa and Caldwell. Four men connected to the Payette operation were arrested, with birds recovered and proceedings expected in Caldwell. The Payette band held a successful first appearance, drawing local support and chamber interest for future performances.

Fire Destroys One Story House South of Fruitland

A fire discovered about 10 20 Saturday morning destroyed the dwelling of Mr Lex one mile south of Fruitland. Strong winds fed the blaze turning it into a roaring mass before firefighters could contain it. The loss is heavy but insurance partly mitigates, and no residents are reported injured. A new house will be built in its place. Portia’s next regular meeting is Monday March 22 with the Americanization Committee leading a program headlined by Rev Vera Hall and Mrs Homer Settle.

Emma Theatre Program Highlights March Events
