Apple Origins and The History of the Fruit
The apple is described as a historic staple of northern temperate regions with mythic and cultural associations. It traces to wild European stock and became refined in the United States, with many varieties bred through grafting and cultivation. The text notes prominent pomologists like A. J. Downing and Johnny Appleseed contributed to spread and diversity, while modern orchards favor quality and productivity over sheer variety.
