Coal shortages ease briefly as Wells Maule move coal cars
Wells and Maule received two cars of limp coat on Saturday and two more on Monday while Levers delivered two cars of damp coal on the same date. By parceling out coal in five hundred pound lots they relieved some distress, but long lines remain as many families have only a few days of supply. Coal dealers and drivers report back orders and pressure to speed shipments amid ongoing cold.

Local Freight Coal Theft Reported in Payette
Last Friday evening several individuals allegedly removed a large quantity of coal from a freight train tied up in Payette. After the local crew rested sixteen hours, three to four tons were said to be taken while no one can identify the exact culprits.

Jury finds Gorton and Kaiser guilty in pool hall case
The jury returned a verdict of guilty against Kaiser and Gorton on charges of violating city ordinances that prohibit miners from frequenting public billiard, pool or card rooms. Gorton was found not guilty. Kaiser appealed and was released on his own recognizance pending bond. The judge set sentencing for Wednesday with a $100 maximum fine or thirty days in jail.

New Trial Granted in McGreavey Case on Manslaughter Conviction
The supreme court overturned Judge Bryan's manslaughter verdict against J. E. McGreavey for the 1907 hiring of Grant Whitney. The ruling says county prosecutors cannot charge a harder offense than the committing magistrate’s charge. McGreavey faced murder related information but was tried for manslaughter. The opinion was written by Chief Justice Airshle and joined by Justices Sullivan and Stewart.

A weather review by observer E F Allen shows December 1909 brought record snow and extreme cold in Payette Valley. The month averaged 13 inches of snowfall with a 0.88 inch precipitation in 24 hours and a 40 degree high on the 9th while the low reached 12 below on the 28th, the coldest in fifteen years. total precipitation and snowfall surpassed recent decades.
