Love in Tennis Terms Sparks Talk of Change
The Christian Science Monitor reports chatter among tennis overlords about replacing love with a term meaning nothing. The piece notes tennis has been labeled effeminate by some, and traces possible origins of love to a Scottish word for nothing or an eastern term from an old form of tennis. It concludes the sport remains popular despite the playful chatter.

Honor for Cuban General Maximo Gomes Monument Prize Winners
Cuba plans a costly monument to General Maximo Gomes, hero of the Cuban wars. Italian sculptor Aldo Gaba won first prize of 25000 dollars for the memorial model, with costs estimated at 200000 dollars. Spanish Cuban Huertas Cabarrocas and American Gutson Borglum took second and third prizes. General Gomes led Cuban forces in 1895 to 1898 and also played a major role in the Ten Years’ War starting in 1868. He died on June 18, 1905, when Cuba’s government gave his family 100000 dollars. The piece notes a postwar reception by American forces in Havana.

Helium Gas Becomes Cheap After Armistice Shipment
Helium gas, once exceedingly rare and valuable, saw output of under 100 cubic feet worldwide with a value around 1700 dollars per cubic foot. A 150000 cubic foot European shipment just before the armistice slashed costs to under 10 cents per cubic foot. Discovered on the sun by spectroscopy, helium is prized for balloons as it is nonflammable. It is now chiefly extracted from Texas and Kansas natural gas, with a delicate but workable separation process based on extreme cooling.
