In Thomasville a black suspect in an extortion bid against Howard M. Hanna of Cleveland was shot dead in the jail yard while attempting to escape. Earlier reports described deputies questioning a messenger linked to the alleged plot to obtain 10 000 dollars.
In Colorado at the state penitentiary 800 convicts offered to participate in a test of a tuberculin vaccine. Twenty five life termers were selected to assess the vaccine’s effectiveness while Governor Thomas announced more names would be added.
In Macon Georgia the Federal Reemployment Bureau announces 65 placements for the week ending Saturday. Of 49 men placed, four secured temporary positions and seven joined PWA projects. Several workers moved to farms or private employment, with local cooperation urged.
Thomas County Masonic Convention set for Ochlochnee Lodge No 117 in Ochlochnee on Thursday night April 5 at 8 o clock. Officers have arranged an instructional program with discussions led by P W Heddick Roy Segler W H Brhswell B B Earle J Fred Singletary and a Masonic Address by Hon Leon F frobby followed by refreshments and adjournment All lodges in the county urged to attend and visiting brothers welcomed
George R. Youmans, elected Saturday over Branch C. Céfiens and H. A. King, has been sworn in as Waycross city commissioner. Officials tabulate 681 votes for Youmans, 538 for Cullens, and 330 for King.
Mrs Lol lie Bell Little Ward has been inducted as postmaster of Commerce Georgia and began duties in the role.
In Valdosta Georgia Judge W E Thomas denied a motion for a new trial for Allen Westberry who was twice convicted and sentenced to death for the 1930 slaying of Mrs W H Browning. Defense lawyers filed notice of an appeal to the State Supreme Court.
President Roosevelt signed the repeal of Hawaii's prohibition laws on Monday, clearing the way for alcohol sales in the territory. The act marks a shift in territorial policy and completes a long standing change for Hawaiian governance.
Washington reports the settlement establishes a three member board to represent workers from AFL unions company unions and others for bargaining based on plant membership. The board will rule on discharges and discrimination with final decisions. Union rolls stay with management unless discrimination cases arise. Companies must not lay off more union workers than non unions after peak season and should prioritize dependents long service and high skill. Roosevelt to work out further details on common sense and justice.
County School Superintendent W E Nichols reports a $11 500 federal allocation to the county schools from the national education fund for the current term. Elementary schools run seven months with some already closed nine month high school terms vary by district, and junior high run eight months. Administration details remain unsettled though likely through regular CWA offices. Georgia received a $50 million nationwide grant. $23,000 was requested for this county, but only part of that amount was granted.
Lagrange Ga The local union of the United Textile Workers of America has purchased ground for a labor temple. The union includes about 2000 workers.
On the firm anniversary the Ansin Shoe Company of Athol Massachusetts pays its employees with silver dollars.
