Cyrus Herman Kotzschmar Curtis of Philadelphia, founder of Curtis Publishing Company and head of Ladies Home Journal and Saturday Evening Post, died aged 83 after a career that began as a 12 year old newsboy. Born in Portland Maine in 1851 he built a publishing empire and donated philanthropically. His daughter married editor Edward Bok.
Madison public schools sponsor a model house planned by the home economics department. In one high school the instructor and students design the living dining room and handle kitchen and laundry furnishings with a budget of 200 dollars, choosing a household washing machine as the main electrical purchase.
