Thursday saw the initial melon loading at Pavo with fourteen cars started. Buyers lined the yards as early sales were strong, with car prices ranging from 150 to 325 dollars. Watson and Dixie Belle melons led the shipment under local cooperative marketing groups urging farmers to avoid green harvests and market delays. Loading is expected to accelerate next week as stations handle the flow.
In Orlando on June 27 at 9 a m all prohibition agencies and enforcement groups across Florida will hold a mass union meeting at the municipal auditorium. The coordinated events in June and July were canceled in favor of this statewide gathering.
Dalton Ga. H P Kitchen Chatsworth druggist is jailed in Murray County on Arson charge tied to his home fire last January. Dutch Bagley is jailed in default of $10,000 bond as an accomplice. State Fire Marshall A Hutchins led the investigation resulting in their arrest.
Horace Rackham, 73, Detroit attorney and neighbor of the Ford family, died after a long illness. He helped Henry Ford set up the Ford Motor Company and, against friends advice, partnered with John W. Anderson to invest $5,000. His Ford shares grew to 1,000 and were later valued at millions.
Newton Ga. T. J. Thomas a middle aged negro was found Tuesday morning about 10 o'clock hanging from a tree near Mims store between the store and Ed Kirksey's home. He had been seen Monday night near Wiley's store. The body bore rope binds and was riddled with buck shot and bullets. No motive or arrests reported.
In Fort Gaines Georgia George Smith a Black man was sentenced in Clay Superior Court by Judge Chas Worrell for fatally striking his wife in a negro cemetery two years ago. This second trial precedes potential gubernatorial clemency as execution is set for August 10, the first such death sentence in Clay County since 1909.
A Tuesday night electrical storm struck a tree in the barnyard of R. L. Harrison near Sparta Georgia killing two hogs that lay at the tree roots. Several pigs a few feet away were unhurt.
New York report says Governor Eugene Talmage of Georgia ordered three million dollars moved from banks to the Capitol vaults with National Guard posted to guard it. The money was moved amid alleged budget law violations by the Highway Board, to prevent a federal injunction and ensure access. Talmadge spoke at Flag Day ceremonies in City Hall.
Atlanta reports say state House officials would not discuss guards at the Capitol linked to highway funds in the treasury amid a possible federal court action by the Highway Department. Treasurer George B. Hamilton cited threats to the Capitol as the reason while denying other motives.
War Department plans to seek executive approval in Washington Tuesday for Southeastern waterway improvements. The Coastal States Coordinating Committee aims to push a 6 foot navigation channel from Savannah to Augusta along with a Congaree River project in South Carolina. Attending are Atlanta Mayor James L. Bowd, South Carolina Governor Ibra Blackword, Columbia Mayor L B Owens, and Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce President George Baldwin among others.
The House Elections Committee approved Lea's constitutional amendment proposal to abolish the electoral college and establish a national system for selecting the president. Representative Lozier indicated action is expected at the next Congress session. The change would divide electoral votes by popular vote within states.
Goodyear Tie and Rubber Company will raise pay 10 percent for 20 000 workers from office boy to executives starting June 15. General Tire and Rubber Company employees also receive a 10 percent boost effective June 15. Harvey S. Firestone said all his companies and stores nationwide will increase pay by 10 percent starting Thursday.
The first bale of the United States 1933 cotton crop was sold to the Houston Cotton Exchange on Tuesday by Teofilo Gardia of La Grulla in the lower Rio Grande Valley for 150 dollars. Funds now pile in the state treasury, about two million dollars. Rumors say the highway board may seek a Federal Court ruling to release the funds without the Governor's approval.
President Roosevelt signs the home mortgage refinancing act to aid borrowers. The plan allows homes worth up to 20000 to swap mortgaged paper for 5 percent government bonds with 80 percent loan value and a three year moratorium on interest. A Home Owners Loan Corporation will administer the program with nationwide offices soon announced.
Atlanta Solicitor John S. McClelland announced that the municipal court will not prosecute beer cases unless public welfare demands it. He cited two juries clearing retailers under a city license and said other charges showed no greater guilt.
