Reverend J M Smith longtime Patoka area pastor dies after fifty nine years in ministry His burial and funeral services followed his death at home near Patoka Illinois Attended by family friends and church members he is remembered for tireless soul winning and devotion to the community
Sunday School at 9:30 and prayer service on Wednesday night at 7 30. Friday night sermons at 7 30 with Grace Pharr of Corinth Mississippi sharing foreign missionary call and sailing Oct 20. This Friday Sept 29 Norman Pasley of Vandalia will preach with special singing by the Smith Sisters and others.
October church services include Sunday School at 9 30 and worship at 10 50 and 7 30 on the 1st and 15th. Evening B A U and Inter B Y P U weekly at 6 30. Thursday Bible study and prayer at 7.00. Wednesday B A at 7.00. Members urged to bring canned fruit or money for Carmi orphanage via Mrs Mojonnier before Thursday. Officers for Inf Armediate B Y P U elected: Violet Nattier president, Evelyn Ellis VP, Leroy Parks secretary, Dayne Adams treasurer, Billy Stringer Bible Readers Leader, Peggy Parks and Durwood Stringer group captains. B A U group captains elected: Mrs Bryan Davidson and P J Mojonnier. W M S voted to adopt an orphan from Carmi. W M S meets Oct 19 with Mrs Wasem leader at Mrs O F Davis home. All invited to attend.

The Hi-Lite class of the Christian Church met at Mrs. Charles Meyers home with co-hostess Mrs. Kenseth Price. Devotions led by Mrs. Austin Good featured Christians Assurance for the Future. Members shared readings, a poem, and business notes. New members joined and gifts from mystery pals were exchanged. Two October meetings were planned with hostesses named. A weiner roast was planned for late October with more hostesses.
Island Chapel held Sunday School at 9 30 a m and a prayer meeting led by Walter Humes followed by evening service with Rev Miller new minister formerly from O Fallon. Mrs Leo Ballance visited Centralia Tuesday while L E Green and family visited Mrs Fred Brown who is recovering after recent surgery in Macon County Hospital Decatur.
Mr and Mrs Fred Carter celebrated their thirty fifth wedding anniversary with a two course noon dinner at Mrs Ralph Elliotts home near Centralia. A two tier cake and purses for the couple marked the occasion with many relatives and friends in attendance including J A Cooper family Elva Towler Carl and partner Lester Howell Milburn Carter Bruce Henry Maude and others.
Richard Eugene Williams, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Williams, died at St Marys Hospital in Centralia Sunday night after several weeks illness. The body was moved to Beery Funeral Home and later funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Patoka with Rev Birch officiating. Burial followed in Patoka cemetery.
Mrs L E Green entertained at a birthday dinner honoring Mr Green's birthday on Wednesday September 19. Attendees included Mrs E E Brown and daughter, Mrs J T Arnold, Mr and Mrs R H Green and sons, Mrs Wade, all of Kinmundy, Mr and Mrs Wallace Alexander, Mr and Mrs Orville Schroeder and daughter Sandra.
The Eagles Sunday School class of the Baptist church met at teacher Miss Violet Nattier's home Friday. A scavenger hunt magic tricks games and contests delighted attendees. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Present were Dwight Britt Sonny Adams Leroy Parks Dale Ellis James Parker and Emil Nattier.
The Smith Family offers heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbors for support during the recent illness and death of their beloved husband father and grandfather. Special gratitude to the Masons and Dr Murfin for help during lonely nights, and to Bros Thomas Humphrey Marquis Dean and Mrs John Linton for comfort and obituary assistance and to donors of flowers.
The Dramatic club led by Misa Christie elected Betty Ballance as president and Brooks Meador as vice president while Nancy Simcox became secretary and treasurer. Freshmen chose Pansy Wasem as president and Martha Matchett as dean Meador as vice president Sammy Jolliff as secretary treasurer. Junior class selected Brooks Meador as president Darvin Jones as vice president Nancy Limecox as secretary treasurer with Mr. Fletcher as sponsor. The juniors held a hamburger fry Tuesday with attendees listed and Mrs. Elsie Gray visiting Decatur Sunday.
Last Sunday the two Methodist churches held a union Sunday School with 110 attendees and a harmonious spirit. Reverend C. M. Miller, former pastor of M E Church of O'Fallon Illinois, will arrive late this week and preach at Patoka church. Sunday School at 9 30 Young people at 7 00 Evalena Jennings leader Prayer meeting Thursdays at 7 30 Everyone is invited to worship.
The Rostra club held its first meeting at Miss Bettie Simcox's home on September 19 with eleven members and four guests. Discussions covered what constitutes making a home and included talks on Glimpses Into a Few Homes, American Homes, Roof Trees, Roofs, Homes of Poland, and Russia and German Homes. Program booklets were issued by S. M. Spurgeon, Donald Wilson, and Inevald Settem. next month’s meeting will be with Mrs. Donald Wilson.
The Patoka Woman's Club held its annual family night banquet at the high school gymnasium marking the opening meeting after summer adjournment. Highlights included music by local performers, an intelligence test with prizes, and a debate on domestic roles.
Mrs Francis Simcox entertained her bridge club at a 12 30 luncheon at her Greenville home on Thursday September 21 Pauline Simcox assisted in serving Thelma Riley won high Virginia Martin second and Leta Beery low Those present included Eunice Altom Eva Potts Mona Kirk Olga Altom Audrey Schroeder Virginia Martin Thelma Riley Leta Beery Francis Simcox and Pauline Simcox Next meeting will be with Eunice Altom.
The Rinkydinks gathered at the Hicks home Saturday afternoon with Connie Meador presiding. Members knitted, sewed, and embroidered after the business session. Nellie Mae Crawford served refreshments. Elected officers: Connie Meador president, Betty Lou Richeson secretary-treasurer, Jackie Hicks janitor, Nellie Mae Crawford local work. Present were Connie Meador, Jackie Hicks, Floye Hicks, Mildred Hill, Evelyn Jennings, and Nellie Mae Crawford.
The Sophomore class met Tuesday afternoon September 19 to elect officers. Elected were Jerry Quayle president Leslie Griffin vice president Dorothy Williams secretary treasurer and Mrs Christie class sponsor.
